The New and the Multiple
A study of Sung Chinese historical consciousness, this is the first comprehensive English work on the subject. It presents "new and multiple" as the key ideas for interpretation. Eleven essays by leading Sung scholars in the U.S., Germany, Japan and Taiwan show that there were important developments in both Sung senses of the past and Sung historiography: from conservatism to historical analogy to new worldviews (Ch'ing-li new policy and Chu His's tao-hsueh), the Sung sought to redefine the human past. The Sung also created or refined the writing of local, universal and genealogical histories, and brought about new visions of China's past.

Between China and Japan
Over the past thirty-five years, Joshua Fogel has pioneered the study of Sino-Japanese cultural and political relations—understood as the intersections of the histories of these two countries. This volume brings together many of his essays and reviews in this new field. For a variety of reasons discussed within, scholars have been reluctant to look at these two nation’s historical connections, either through comparative analysis or actual interactions. Fogel’s work has focused squarely here. Jao Tsung-i’s scholarship illuminated the development of classical Chinese literature from antiquity through the end of the Qing dynasty. In this volume, eight interviews with and essays by Jao are translated faithfully into English, giving a sampling of his diverse insights into literature and its broader significance. Topics range from the religious beliefs underpinning the earliest Chinese writings, to the influence of Chan Buddhism on Chinese poetics, to Gu Yanwu’s (1613–1682) poetic protest against the Manchu conquest.
