Musicians tend to believe that the mystery of their art cannot be objectively studied, quantified, or explained. As a result, the term «motor learning» is rarely used in connection with musicians, and an empirical approach to musical performance is more the exception than the rule. Sports scientists, however, show a great interest in musicians because of their advanced skill level and the attentional and emotional demands of the concert stage. This work combines knowledge across disciplines. Advances toward an understanding of human behavior and cognition offer clues to strategies of motor learning and performance that promote the well-being of musicians and athletes. This book provides a forum for an interdisciplinary exchange of research, laying the groundwork for future projects.

Art in Motion

Musicians, dancers and athletes spend a tremendous amount of time and effort preparing for performance in the hope of success, aiming for certainty, flexibility and expressiveness. Their use of visualization, verbal labels, muscle energy, and emotion is often based upon intuition instead of knowledge. Art in Motion intends to fill this vacuum. Effective training and teaching hinge on motivation, self-regulation, useful feedback, and an understanding of perception, cognition, timing, motor skill learning, and automation. Information about empirical research concerning mental representations of movement and musical goals can drive the creative process, facilitating the artist at work. Innovative and intentional - purposeful and meaningful - techniques of practice are developed.

Motivation in Learning and Performance in the Arts and Sports

Motivation is a crucial factor in achieving success in any field, but especially in the performing arts and sports, where consistent practice, discipline, and creativity are required to maintain a high level of performance. The science of motivation is relevant today more than ever for several reasons. First, motivation is a fundamental aspect of human behavior, and understanding what drives individuals to perform at their best is essential in many contexts, including education, athletics, and the workplace. In this period of recovery and reset after pandemic-related lockdowns, knowledge about motivation can inform personal and policy decisions moving forward. Second, motivation is critical for achieving goals, and an understanding of what motivates individuals can help them aspire to set and achieve realistic and meaningful aims. Third, motivation is essential for maintaining mental and physical health and wellbeing, and an exploration of contributory factors can help individuals manage stress and anxiety.

The Musician's Mind

Where does learning begin and how is it sustained and stored in the brain? For musicians, these questions are at the very core of their creative lives. Cognitive and neuroscience have flung wide the doors of our understanding, but bridging the gap between research data and music-making requires a unique immersion in both worlds. Lynn Helding presents a symphony of discoveries that illuminate how musicians can optimize their mental wellbeing and cognitive abilities. She addresses common brain myths, motor learning research and the concept of deliberate practice, the values of instructional feedback, technology’s role in attention disorders, the challenges of parenting young musicians, performance anxiety and its solutions, and the emerging importance of music as a social justice issue. More than an exploration of the brain, The Musician’s Mind is an inspiring call for artists to promote the cultivation of emotion and empathy as cornerstones of a civilized society. No matter your instrument or level of musical ability, this book will reveal to you a new dynamic appreciation for the mind’s creative power.
