Japanese Women and Foreigners in Meiji Japan
After the treaties between Japan and America, England, the Netherlands, France and Russia, in 1859 the port of Yokohama was opened for foreign merchants. Since there were exceptionally little Western women after the opening of this treaty port, the authorities installed a brothel quarter. But the high infection risks made the resident foreigners cautious. They started to contract girls from local merchant families to stay with them, as if having a "marriage on time". Often out of these relationships children were born, for whom reportedly especially the Dutch and German foreigners felt deeply responsible. The Dutch merchant Rudolf Adriaan Mees had two successive Japanese women Okino and Mai, with whom he had two sons. Their case can be considered representative for an intense cultural interaction between two extremely different cultures at the beginning of the modern era in Meiji Japan.
Low density cellular plastics
Foams are gas filled integral structures in which the gas is finely dispersed throughout acontinuouslyconnected solid phase. The bulk density is usually substantially lower than that of the solid component, and for the foams which form the focus for this book the volume fraction of the gas phase is considerably greater than 0.5 and in most instances in excess of 0.9. Many ofthe materials encountered in every day experience, such as bread, plants and trees, structural materials for buildings, comfort materials for domestic and automotive seating, shock absorbers or car bumpers and materials for noise control, have one thing in common - the cellular nature of their physical structure. Whyare thesestructuressoimportantin the naturaland man-made world? The reasons are both technical and commercial. From a technical viewpoint cellular materials offer: 1. high specific stiffness and strength - making them suitable for structural applications; 2. closeto idealenergymanagement - hencetheir useinthermalandacoustic insulation, vibration damping, acoustic absorption and shock mitigation; and 3. comfort - hence their use for domestic and automotive seating.
Propagation of Sound in Porous Media
This book has grown out of the research activities of the author in the fields of sound propagation in porous media and modelling of acoustic materials. It is assumed that the reader has a background of advanced calculus, including an introduction to differential equations, complex variables and matrix algebra. A prior exposure to theory of elasticity would be advantageous. Complexity Economics
Economic archaeology and ancient economic history have boomed the past decades. The former thanks to greatly enhanced techniques to identify, collect, and interpret material remains as proxies for economic interactions and performance; the latter by embracing the frameworks of new institutional economics. Both disciplines, however, still have great difficulty talking with each other. There is no reliable method to convert ancient proxy-data into the economic indicators used in economic history. In turn, the shared cultural belief-systems underlying institutions and the symbolic ways in which these are reproduced remain invisible in the material record. This book explores ways to bring both disciplines closer together by building a theoretical and methodological framework to evaluate and integrate archaeological proxy-data in economic history research. Rather than the linear interpretations offered by neoclassical or neomalthusian models, we argue that complexity economics, based on system theory, offers a promising way forward.
