This issue of Matatu offers cutting-edge studies of contemporary Nigerian literature, a selection of short fiction and poetry, and a range of essays on various themes of political, artistic, socio-linguistic, and sociological interest. Several essays examine the poetry of Hope Eghagha and the Delta writer Tanure Ojaide. Studies of the prose fiction of Chinua Achebe, Tayo Olafioye, Uwem Akpan, and Chimamanda Adichie are complemented by a searching exposé of the exploitation of Ayi Kwei Armah on the part of the metropolitan publishing world and by a recent interview...

The Reading of the Will

Funerals are usually the time when family members come together to bury their departed loved one. In Nigeria, the death of Nkechi the family matriarch, forces members of her family to reassess their relationship with her and each other. Of the siblings present, only Ejituru was given birth by her. Six were children borne for her by a girl (Onyeka) who she married and gave her husband to produce children for her given her difficulties with pregnancy which meant that she could not give her husband a son to carry his line. This funeral was the first time these children were together as adults. Despite being the object of her siblings’ acrimony, Ejituru hoped to ensure family unity despite the absence of Nkechi. Did she succeed?

This edited collection reviews the relationship and clashes between the military and the media in post-colonial Nigeria. The first section addresses the historical context and praxis of the military-media relationship in Nigeria. The chapters explore the military-media modes of operations, the prevailing political climate, the military interregnums and milestones in Nigeria’s media sector, ethical and professional consideration for defence correspondence, media ownership structures, regulatory bodies, media laws, military–media relations, and the need for alternative media for military operations. The second section deals with interventions, impacts, and influences of citizen journalists, social media influencers, online media, online stakeholders, artificial intelligence, and social media platforms in shaping the media space narratives. They also explore evolving challenges such as “fake news” and hate speech. The key audience includes regional and international journalists and military organisations, researchers, academics, NGOs, governments, and others interested in the history and future of military media relations in Africa.

Children's Literature & Story-telling

Contributors analyse the theories behind children's literature, its functions and cultural significance, and suggest the new directions this literature is taking in terms of its craft, themes and intentions. Africa's encounter with the West and its implications and consequences remain far-reaching and enduring in the craft and thrust of its creative writers. The contributors to ALT 33 analyse the connections between traditional stories and myths that have been told to children, as well as the work of contemporary creative writers who are writing for children in order that they understand this complex history. Some of these writers are developing traditional myths, folk tales, and legends and...
