Transitions and Trees
Structural operational semantics is a simple, yet powerful mathematical theory for describing the behaviour of programs in an implementation-independent manner. This book provides a self-contained introduction to structural operational semantics, featuring semantic definitions using big-step and small-step semantics of many standard programming language constructs, including control structures, structured declarations and objects, parameter mechanisms and procedural abstraction, concurrency, nondeterminism and the features of functional programming languages. Along the way, the text introduces and applies the relevant proof techniques, including forms of induction and notions of semantic equivalence (including bisimilarity). Thoroughly class-tested, this book has evolved from lecture notes used by the author over a 10-year period at Aalborg University to teach undergraduate and graduate students. The result is a thorough introduction that makes the subject clear to students and computing professionals without sacrificing its rigour. No experience with any specific programming language is required.

Molotov and Soviet Government
Exploring such general issues as the differing roles of the Communist Party and the State in ruling the former Soviet Union and the exercise of political power in the Stalin regime, this first western study of the chief Soviet government body during the 1930s traces the history of the Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom) whilst Molotov was chairman. Sovnarkom co-ordinated the work of the commissariats (later to be called ministries) and supervised the implementation of the policies of collectivization and industrialization. It was intimately connected with the Great Purge as the heads of the secret police were commissars. Using recently available archival sources, the working of the institution and changes in its structure and membership are examined, as is the political history of the institution, including the parts played by Molotov, Ordzhonikidze, Kaganovich and other major politicians who were members during the critical decade in this development of Stalinism.
Studies in West Frisian Grammar
In this volume, Germen de Haan gives a multi-faceted view of the syntax, sociolinguistics, and phonology of West-Frisian. The author discusses distinct aspects of the syntax of verbs in Frisian: finiteness and Verb Second, embedded root phenomena, the verbal complex, verbal complementation, and complementizer agreement. Because Frisian has minority language status and is of interest to sociolinguists, the author reviews the linguistic changes in Frisian under the influence of the dominant Dutch language and, more generally, reflects on how to deal with contact-induced change in grammar. Finally, in three phonological articles, the author discusses nasalization in Frisian, the putatively symmetrical vowel inventory of Frisian, and the variation between schwa + sonorant consonants and syllabic sonorant consonants.
