This project combines existing knowledge with new in-depth pilot studies on women engineering career progression linked to qualitative research work on the experiences of both women and men working in engineering and technology research, using cross-comparison as a research strategy and a longitudinal perspective. The results inform scientific and technological societies, and other stakeholders towards greater gender awareness and fairness in recognizing scientific excellence in engineering and technology.
The authors discuss individual and societal factors which influence the gender biased image of science, engineering and technology (SET) prevalent in young people. From different angles the authors investigate the consequences of this often unattractive but also partly obsolete image for gendered study and occupational choices of girls and boys. Besides peers, school and media as main influencing socialisation instances the contributions focus on young people’s selfconcept regarding the development of gendered attitudes towards SET. Further this book includes approaches and concepts of inclusion measures aiming on changing the image of SET and attracting young people, and especially girls, for these study and job fields.
Through empirical material as well as theoretical discussions, this book explores developments in gender-technology relations from the 1980s to today. The author draws on her long-lasting research in the field, providing insight in both historical and more recent discussions of gender in relation to computers and computing.
In The Debate on Probable Opinions in the Scholastic Tradition, Rudolf Schuessler portrays scholastic approaches to a qualified disagreement of opinions. The book outlines how scholastic regulations concerning the use of opinions changed in the early modern era, giving rise to an extensive debate on the moral and epistemological foundations of reasonable disagreements. The debate was fueled by probabilism and anti-probabilism in Catholic moral theology and thus also serves as a gateway to these doctrines. All developments are outlined in historical context, while special attention is paid to the evolution of scholastic notions of probability and their importance for the emergence of modern probability.
This book provides a critical and historical perspective on the ways concepts of 'gender' and 'engineering' have been socially constructed and the relationship to the masculinist image of engineering that has endured over time. To alter this situation, the authors in this volume propose that the focus of analyses move from the under-representation of women in engineering to an investigation of the more relational concept of gender and how gender and gender relations are embedded in the entire engineering enterprise.
