The Spoken Language in a Multimodal Context
Recently, research in the Humanities is showing an increasing interest in exactly how language and other semiotic resources support each other. The eighteen articles of this book focus on the interplay between spoken language and other modalities and address a spectrum of cross-modal resources and their functions. They also discuss how multimodal resources are exploited to increase communicative effectiveness and broaden accessibility to knowledge. This is illustrated with examples from discourse types including dramatic, literary and audiovisual texts, Facebook communication and chats, comics and audio-guides. The volume will be of interest to scholars of linguistics, translation studies, museology and education, and for readers interested in the wide array of possibilities that multimodal texts open up for meaning-making.
Language Change in the 20th Century
Language Change in the 20th Century: Exploring micro-diachronic evolutions in Romance languages examines the distinctive features that set the study of the 20th century apart from preceding periods. With a primary focus on Romance languages, including Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, the book advocates for the adoption of innovative methodologies to enhance the nuanced retrieval of research data: the use of speaker’s attitudes questionnaires, apparent time constructions, and S-curves. Additionally, new materials are addressed as diachronic data sources: mass-media recordings from radio and TV, colloquial conversations, and sociolinguistic corpora. Results focus on the evolution of discourse markers, address terms, as well as on the influence of specific processes such as colloquialization or external mechanisms on the language changes developed during this period. In sum, the 20th century is presented in this book as a new strand in diachronic studies, rather than another time span.
El español coloquial
Este trabajo se enmarca dentro de los estudios actuales sobre la variación en el lenguaje y pretende ser un primer acercamiento a la variedad diafásica, en concreto al registro coloquial y a su ''gramática'', en un tipo de discurso, la conversación. A una introducción, en la que se define o, más exactamente, se reconoce el español coloquial, siguen una descripción y explicación de las frecuencias lingüísticas coloquiales (fónicas, morfosintácticas y léxico-semánticas) y un estudio de la interacción entre las formas lingüísticas y sus funciones pragmático-comunicativas. Como apéndice, se añaden una serie de ejercicios de identificación de los fenómenos prototípicos coloquiales y, así pues, de este registro.

This collection of essays examines current trends in scholarly research on Spanish author Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000). It concentrates on the least explored areas of Martín Gaite's oeuvre, such as her collage artwork, the relationship between image and text in her work, and her close relationship with themes such as genre writing, the fairy tale, and textual/physical notions of space, as well as her personal theories on orality and narration. As we pass the tenth anniversary of her death, Martín Gaite continues to be an increasing focus of study, as scholars start to identify and comprehend the breadth and scope of her work. The essays in the volume complement previous studies of Martín Gaite's major works from the 1960s and 1970s by focusing largely on her later novels, together with in-depth analysis of the manuscripts and artistic materials that have been made available since her death.
Attitude and Stance in Discourse
Stancetaking is inherent in verbal communication, as it is connected with the expression of subjectivity and the construction of intersubjectivity in discourse. This book presents theoretical findings in this field and their practical implications, exploring the variations in time and space of meaning negotiation processes in a large variety of communicative forms, including political and judicial discourse, journalism, fiction, private letters, informal conversations, and school debates. Some articles refer to events with a strong impact on social and political life, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or Ceaușescu’s trial. The volume’s approach is mainly pragma-rhetoric and interactional, but also interdisciplinary, promoting dialogue between stance researchers in different fields.
