Reckoning and Framing
It is necessary for every discipline to take stock of its own current state every 20-30 years. Such review helps determine the discipline's path and tasks for the coming decades, and it also facilitates reflection upon the changes and challenges of the scientific and non-scientific world around it. Discrete Geometry for Computer Imagery
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Discrete Geometry for Computer Imagery, DGCI 2005, held in Poitiers, France in April 2005. The 36 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 53 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on applications, discrete hierarchical geometry, discrete tomography, discrete topology, object properties, reconstruction and recognition, uncertain geometry, and visualization.
Eger Stars
Egri Csillagok ("Eger Stars") by Géza Gárdonyi, one of the most recognized and widely read books in Hungarian literature, was first published in 1899. The historical novel is set in a Hungary defeated by the Ottoman Turks at Mohács in 1526 and torn apart by rival kings, the Hungarian King John Zápolya with his base in Transylvania and the Austrian Hapsburg Ferdinand. The novel reaches its climax with the successful Hungarian defense of Eger Castle in 1552 by some 2,000 defenders against an Ottoman army numbering over 40,000.
Perspectives of Diaspora Existence
Migration and diaspora studies have been emphatically present in social science discourse for decades. Perspectives of Diaspora Existence sheds light on the conceptual dichotomy of "diaspora" vs. the Hungarian term "szrvny," examining the differences in their content, use, and historical interpretation. This uniquely Hungarian diaspora concept was historically constructed in the Carpathian Basin and has been integrated into Hungarian national discourses. Radio Free Europe and the Pursuit of Democracy
A leading expert on East and Central European and Soviet affairs, George R. Urban offers an insider's perspective on the history of Radio Free Europe by drawing on his service during the 1960s and his term as overall director in the 1980s.
