The book examines the governing roles of the police in Argentina, focusing on Seguridad, which conflates personal safety with state security.
•It analyses culture during the Argentinian crisis from an interdisciplinary angle (literature, cinema, art and music). •Wide-ranging material: ‘highbrow’ art (Leonel Luna), popular culture (cumbia villera), cultural products that challenge these distinctions (César Aira, Martín Rejtman), and political art (Grupo de Arte Callejero). •The only book in English to focus comprehensively on race and nation in contemporary Argentina from a cultural studies perspective. •A broad understanding of the crisis (late 1990s to mid-2000s), which implies a more comprehensive account of this event. •Due to its analysis of white middle-class identity in Argentina, the book is also a contribution to the emerging field of whiteness studies in Latin America. •The book looks at a trend that would eventually affect the US and Europe in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis: how disaffection caused by neoliberalism triggered in people a concern with national identity which, in many cases, led to a rise of nativism and racism (e.g. Brexit, Trump’s election).

Conflict, Heritage and World-Making in the Chaco documents and interprets the physical remains and afterlives of the Chaco War (1932–35) – known as South America’s first ‘modern’ armed conflict – in what is now present-day Paraguay. It focuses not only on archaeological remains as conventionally understood, but takes an ontological approach to heterogeneous assemblages of objects, texts, practices and landscapes shaped by industrial war and people’s past and present engagements with them. These assemblages could be understood to constitute a ‘dark heritage’, the debris of a failed modernity. Yet it is clear that they are not simply dead memorials to this bloody war, but have been, and continue to be active in making, unmaking and remaking worlds – both for the participants and spectators of the war itself, as well as those who continue to occupy and live amongst the vast accretions of war matériel which persist in the present.
This book is the product of an endless individual and collective process of mourning. It departs from the author’s mourning for her parents, their histories and struggles in Germany as Gastarbeiter, while it also engages with the political mourning of intersectional feminist movements against feminicide inCentral and South America; the struggles against state and police misogynoir violence of #SayHerName in the United States; the resistance of refugees and migrantized people against the coloniality of migration in Germany; and the intense political grief work of families, relatives, and friends who lost their loved ones in racist attacks from the 1980s until today in Germany. Bearing witness to their stories and accounts, this book explores how mourning is shaped both by its historical context and the political labor of caring commons, while it also follows the building of a conviviality infrastructure of support against migration-coloniality necropolitics, dwelling toward transformative and reparative practices of common justice.
