Everybody Dies in This Novel

One day Memento Mori realises that he is a character in a book who has the power to travel from one book to another. He decides to strike against evil writers who sentence their characters to death. He persuades Romeo and Juliet that suicide is not the best solution and that when they are adults they will remember these days with laughter. To save many others from an untimely death he travels to the Reichenbach Falls to push Professor Moriarty to his death. Memento Mori's efforts to save more characters from their authors is interrupted when he learns that his author plans to kill off a character. He has no information about who the intended victim is, so with the help of H. G. Wells' time-machine he takes all the characters to a different dimension where they have a better chance of survival.

'Multiple allusions from literary classics are woven into his postmodern narrative as he sends up digimodernism and the shallowness of the desire for fame. Dante, Conan Doyle, Samuel Beckett, George Orwell and other literary heavyweights rebel against the author. As a maverick publishing person, I relished the way Bestseller pokes fun at literary pretentiousness, humbug and bookish aspirations. "The earth rotated around PR and everything could be sold including me, you, him, her, it, us and them." Pierre jumps from the 147th floor of a building in Dubai ("the city built out of almost nothing"), and is welcomed into Literary Hell by Dante and Ceberus. He achieves what he could not in his life...

LRB BOOKSHOP'S AUTHOR OF THE MONTH ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S BEST BOOKS OF 2019 WITH A NEW AFTERWORD BY ANNE ENRIGHT, AUTHOR OF THE ACTRESS 'If you haven't read Bernhard, you will not know of the most radical advance in fiction since Joyce ... My advice: dive in.' Lucy Ellmann 'I absolutely love Bernhard: he is one of the darkest and funniest writers ... A must read for everybody.' Karl Ove Knausgaard An unnamed writer arrives at an 'artistic dinner' hosted by a composer and his society wife: a couple he once admired, but has now come to detest. They have been brought together by their friend Joana's suicide, but the guest of honour, a famous actor from the Burgtheatre, is late. As the guests await his arrival, little do they know that they are being subjected to the narrator's merciless scrutiny from his wing-backed throne, the targets of a tirade of epic, frenzied proportions. When the star actor finally arrives, he ushers in an explosive end to the evening that is impossible to see coming. Originally banned in Thomas Bernhard's homeland, Woodcutters brutally exposes the hollow pretentiousness of the Austrian bourgeoisie in an unforgettable firework display of humour and horror.

The Fig Tree is a novel composed of the intertwining stories of the family of Jadran, a 30-something who tries to piece together the story of his relatives to better understand himself. Because he cannot understand why Anja walked out of their shared life, he tries to understand the suspicious death of his grandfather and the withdrawal of his grandmother into oblivion and dementia. With all his might, Jadran tries to understand the departure of his father in the first year of the war in the Balkans as he also tries to understand his mother, with her bewildering resentment of his grandfather, and her silent disappointment with his father. The Fig Tree is a multigenerational family saga, a tour de force spanning three generations from the mid-20th century through the Balkans wars of the 90s until present day. Vojnovic is a master storyteller, and while fateful choices made by his characters are often dictated by the historical realities of the times they live in, at its heart this is an intimate story of family, of relationships, of love and freedom and the choices we make.
