Entangled Histories of the Balkans - Volume Four
The present volume is the last in the Entangled Balkans series and marks the end of several years of research guided by the transnational, “entangled history” and histoire croisée approaches. The essays in this volume address theoretical and methodological issues of Balkan or Southeast European regional studies—not only questions of scholarly concepts, definitions, and approaches but also the extra-scholarly, ideological, political, and geopolitical motivations that underpin them. These issues are treated more systematically and by a presentation of their historical evolution in various national traditions and schools. Some of the essays deal with the articulation of certain forms of “Balkan heritage” in relation to the geographical spread and especially the cultural definition of the “Balkan area.” Concepts and definitions of the Balkans are thus complemented by (self-)representations that reflect on their cultural foundations.

Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts, Or, Practical Aesthetics
The enduring influence of the architect Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) derives primarily from his monumental theoretical foray Der Stil in der technischen und tektonischen Künsten (1860-62), here translated into English for the first time. A richly illustrated survey of the technical arts (textiles, ceramics, carpentry, masonry), Semper's analysis of the preconditions of style forever changed the interpretative context for aesthetics, architecture, and art history. Style, Semper believed, should be governed by historical function, cultural affinities, creative free will, and the innate properties of each medium. Medieval Ornament

Checklist of Painters from 1200-1994
The Witt Library of the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, is one of the world's greatest art history libraries. It contains some 1.7 million illustrations of the work of painters, draughtsmen, and engravers of the Western tradition, all of whom have been indexed by name, dates, and nationality. This new second edition of the Checklist of Painters is a transcription of the Witt index as it currently exists. The names of 66,000 artists, their dates, and their nationality (or school) are reproduced in alphabetical order. The Checklist of Painters is probably the most exhaustive work of its kind in existence; it now lists all painters (known by art historians) to have lived and worked from the year 1200 to 1994. It will be an important reference text in the art history collection of any public, academic, or professional library.
