Global resource demand and large-scale conservation interventions are diminishing tropical communities' access to food, fiber, fodder and fuel from wild (e.g. uncultivated) resources. Theory disagrees on whether the wellbeing of wild harvesting households will thus be diminished, or if it can be improved by a transition to non-wild livelihoods and other economic development. Here we present a cross-sectional analysis identifying in which contexts households with non-wild livelihoods have experienced superior food security and life satisfaction across the tropics, and vice versa--contexts where wild harvesting continues to be associated with better outcomes. Using a dataset of ~10,800 househo...

This thesis examines the prospective value of social capital for developmental purposes. It contends that the role that social relationships play in poor actors' efforts to cope with and move out of poverty needs to be assessed under a dual understanding of social structure, as both the medium and outcome of social action. The study adopts Bourdieu's 'theory of practice' as its main theoretical approach. Actors' investments in and uses of relationships were analysed in relation to their objective conditions--stocks of capital--and associated practices and strategies. Social capital was operationalised as both networks of relations (local, external, and vertical) and social resources (mediate...

Report of the seventeenth meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases, Geneva, Switzerland, 11-12 October 2023

The seventeenth meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (STAG-NTD) was held at the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, on 11–12 October 2023. The theme of the meeting was “Accelerating towards 2030”. The statements and statistics presented in the report may not represent the views, policies and official statistics of the Organization. Through a pre-recorded video, Dr Jérôme Salomon (WHO Assistant Director-General, Universal Health Coverage, Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases) welcomed participants to the meeting. He said that NTDs are one of the most formidable health challenges. They afflict...

Digitalization, Economic Development and Social Equality

This book represents one of the outcomes of the World Complexity Science Academy (WCSA) Conference held in Rome in the Autumn of 2018, titled “Turbulent Convergence”. It reflects the fruitful discussions developed by a number of papers presented at the event by scholars from several different countries. In particular, the volume represents a great effort on the part of the WCSA to gather research carried out in Europe and beyond and to provide a forum for valuable discussion at international level in a cosmopolitan way.

Report of the sixth meeting of the WHO Diagnostic Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases, Geneva, Switzerland, 14–15 February 2024

The Diagnostic Technical Advisory Group (DTAG) for the WHO Global NTD Programme was formed to foster a unified approach for identifying and prioritizing diagnostic needs, and to inform WHO strategies and guidance on NTD diagnostics. The first meeting of the DTAG was held at the Inter Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Switzerland, in October 2019. The second took place virtually in October 2020, the third in June 2021, the fourth in October 2021 and the fifth in November 2022. Several disease-specific and cross-cutting DTAG subgroups have been formed, resulting in the development of target product profiles (TPPs) for new diagnostics, some of which have been published, and some of which are in pr...

We live in an era where people live longer but also suffer from more chronic illnesses. Yet these two issues present not only significant challenges to healthcare professionals, but also governments seeking cost-effective ways to manage their health and social care budgets. Encouraging people to live healthier lifestyles is, therefore, a fundamental issue for both those at risk as well as for society as a whole. This is the first textbook to present not only the theoretical foundations that explain health behavior change but also the methods by which change can be assessed and the practical contexts where theory and method can be applied. Covering behavior change aimed at improving health as...

Domestic Violence as State Crime presents a provocative challenge to the way that domestic violence is understood and addressed. Underpinned by a radical feminist perspective, the central argument of this book is that domestic violence against women constitutes a patriarchal state crime. By analysing the international, collective, structural, and institutional dimensions of this harm, the author outlines a spectrum of state complicity ranging from passive bystander to active producer, participant, and perpetrator. The wide-ranging analysis in this book draws on data from comparable liberal-democratic contexts including Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, in order to compreh...
