Building the Clinical Research Workforce: Challenges, Capacities and Competencies

This is an unprecedented time for clinical research. The number and complexity of clinical research studies have increased significantly in the last decade. Individual participation in clinical research broadened, with an increase in diverse populations, diseases, and geographic settings. The successful execution of these studies, however, has been compromised by an international shortage of clinical research professionals, coupled with an appreciation of the growing number of core competencies necessary for performance. Developed over a decade ago, the Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency (JTF) Framework outlines the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are essential for the safe and effective conduct of a clinical study. This framework has been used to develop professional pathways, trainings, and certification programs and has been extended internationally through translation.

Implementation Science in Nursing: A Framework for Education and Practice focuses on the implementation process, which is the study of methods and strategies that promote the methodical uptake of research findings and EBPs into routine practices to ultimately improve patient...

Solitudes of the Workplace

Solitudes of the Workplace focuses on experiences of marginalization, uncertainty and segregation created by the hierarchical structures of categories in universities and by gendered identities. Studying a wider range of women’s roles in universities than prior research, the experiences of support staff, senior administrators, researchers, non-academic administrators, and contract teachers are added to those of faculty and students. The essays show how attempts to introduce new knowledge are manoeuvered and the resistance this process can encounter, as well as the ways in which institutional policies can blur and change identities. Addressing longstanding issues such as the entanglement of...

Lone Star Splash: From the Past In the Lone Star State, during the era of segregation, competitive swimming and diving for both boys and girls were introduced in four black high schools. These four black high schools competed in the first district swimming meet at Central High School in Galveston, Texas, in the spring of 1955. Over a thirteen-year period, performances in every event improved significantly. In 1966, the last season prior to integration, seven teams competed for district and state honors. Phillis Wheatley of Houston claimed the first three district championships, followed by Jack Yates, who won five consecutive championships. Booker T. Washington High School of Houston claimed the last five district championships and three state championships. Both boys and girls competed for the city/district championships in the four competitive strokes plus fancy diving. Many individuals who competed in the high school programs earned collegiate swimming scholarships at HBCU all over America.

They were shrewd, strong-willed individuals who brought staunch beliefs and strong disciplines with them and settled in an untamed wilderness which became Cleburne County. Cleburne County and Its Peoplehas drawn from the past and the present--chronicling the lives of settlers facing hardships and tragedies, discovering profound beauty, mastering vast natural resou...
