A Inversão Sexual: Estudos Médico-Sociais
Com a publicação de A Inversão Sexual, em 1895, Adelino Pereira da Silva foi pioneiro em Portugal no estudo da homossexualidade . O tema, mais precisamente, a pederastia, já havia sido abordado no romance de Abel Botelho, O Barão de Lavos, de 1891, mas seria só em 1902 que Egas Moniz lhe daria tratamento científico, dedicando à homossexualidade um capítulo de A Vida Sexual, obra que se manteria canónica durante muitos anos, com sucessivas reedições. Como Adelino Pereira da Silva refere: “É pois com este fim que escrevemos. Em Portugal, nada havia ainda feito sobre o assunto, seduziu-nos a novidade e a precisão de um estudo assim; fomos ousados e tentámo-lo. Sirva-nos a ousadia para encobrir a incompetência.” Mas Adelino Pereira da Silva revelou-se ousado também pela coragem que demonstrou ao abordar publicamente um assunto que, à época, era um enorme tabu. Ele mesmo tem consciência disso ao referir: “Poderão chamar-nos imorais por pormos a nu tantas feridas gangrenosas, mas se a imoralidade é isto, se quem condena os podres da sociedade, fornecendo meios para purificá-la, se pode considerar um imoral, bendita imoralidade!”
