Das Verhältnis des Menschen zum Tier stellt eine der großen Debatten der Gegenwart dar. Mit dem jungen Forschungsfeld der Human-Animal Studies leisten die Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften einen wertvollen Beitrag zu dieser Frage der Zeit und weisen auf die Gesellschaftlichkeit der herrschenden Mensch-Tier-Verhältnisse hin. Dieser Band versammelt als eine der ersten deutschsprachigen Veröffentlichungen transdisziplinäre Beiträge, die nicht nur theoretische Fragen der Konstitution von Mensch und Tier erörtern, sondern auch daran anschließende Diskussionen über Geschlecht, Identität und politische Praxis aufzeigen. Interactions between Animals and Humans in Graeco-Roman Antiquity
The seventeen contributions to this volume, written by leading experts, show that animals and humans in Graeco-Roman antiquity are interconnected on a variety of different levels and that their encounters and interactions often result from their belonging to the same structures, ‘networks’ and communities or at least from finding themselves together in a certain setting, context or environment – wittingly or unwittingly. Papers explore the concrete categories of interaction between animals and humans that can be identified, in what contexts they occur, and what types of evidence can be productively used to examine the concept of interactions. Articles in this volume take into account literary, visual, and other types of evidence. A comprehensive research bibliography is also provided.

Animal Housing and Human–Animal Relations
This book provides an in-depth investigation into the practices of animal housing systems with international contributions from across the humanities and social sciences. By attending to a range of different sites such as the zoo, the laboratory, the farm and the animal shelter, to name a few, the book explores material technologies from the perspective that these are integrated parts of a larger biopolitical infrastructure and questions how animal housing systems, and the physical infrastructures that surround central human-animal practices, come into being. Beyond the Human-Animal Divide
This volume explores the potential of the concept of the creaturely for thinking and writing beyond the idea of a clear-cut human-animal divide, presenting innovative perspectives and narratives for an age which increasingly confronts us with the profound ecological, ethical and political challenges of a multispecies world. Animals and Humans in German Literature, 1800-2000
The recent emergence of the discipline of literary animal studies regards literature in itself as constitutive element of a history of knowledge. The discipline has led not only to the expansion of the corpus of texts traditionally connected with animals, but also established new concepts and methods for revising conventional cultural dichotomies (subject and object, human and animal). The 10 essays collected in this volume are devoted to a wide range of case studies on the relationship between animality and poetics in German-language literature since the 19th century. They display a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to a number of texts packed with references to animals, considered not primarily as objects of literature, but as agents endowed with an active role in the production of literature, and which have left repressed or forgotten traces in texts.
