The book provides guidelines and practical creative exercises which equip creativemajor students as well as creative practitioners with fundamental knowledge on creation methods. Combination of functionality, simplicity and aesthetics in modern design is considered a fundamental design principle in the Bauhaus School in Germany, and, inspired by the School, the creative handcrafting exercises and the concepts introduced in this book are primarily coherent with this principle. The book draws a direction between two and three dimensional material-based design and modern digital creation process. The first part of the book introduces various creative handcrafting exercises on proportion, geometry and modularity, among other fundamental design principles. The creative exercises will sensitize students on aesthetical and structural issues, and thus serve as an essential building block for application of the design principles to computer-based creative processes, which are introduced in the second part of the book. The book covers the main developments in the social sciences after World War Two. Chapters on economics, human geography, political science, psychology, social anthropology, and sociology will interest anyone wanting short, accessible histories of those disciplines; they will also make it easy for readers to compare disciplines. A final chapter offers a blueprint for writing the history of the social sciences as a whole, drawing attention to the role of interdisciplinary work and to the importance of factors from the Second World War to the sixties and the fall of communism.
A number of crises since the end of the Cold War have demonstrated the insecurity of ordinary people in circumstances where states are either unable to provide protection, or are themselves the principle sources of violence. Public opinion has provoked international politicians to recognise a problem in which they should intervene; but it is rare for effective policies to be implemented. Emerging from a series of workshops on the International Security of Marginal Populations, the essays seek solutions which go beyond the traditional emphasis on the interests of the state, and give due weight to the needs of minority populations. This book examines gender and the transformation of contemporary Iran. In particular it documents the changes in women’s lives, challenging the idea that the revolution put back the clock for women and showing how they have now become agents of social change rather than victims.
"This volume, which grows out of a research project on women and philanthropy sponsored by the Center for the Study of Philanthropy at the City University of New York, expands our understanding of female beneficence in shaping diverse political cultures ... As in the United States, this activity often enabled women to create parallel power structures that resembled, but rarely replicated, the commercial and political arenas of men. From nuns who managed charitable and educational institutions to political activists demanding an end ot discriminatory practices against women and children, many of the women whose lives are documented in these pages claimed distinctive public roles through the n...
Recent work has focused on the politics of consumption and its manifestation in a number of situations. This volume extends these debates, providing a tighter focus and contributing to a noticeable gap in the field that numerous scholars are beginning to turn towards: that is, organizations of consumers themselves who have chosen to speak for all consumers and similar such bodies of experts which act on behalf of consumers. The volume is fortunate in drawing upon a number of scholars who are about to publish major works on the subject, but who are happy to provide summary versions of their work for the volume. The book pays particular attention to specific moments in consumer mobilization an...
