20 years of Criminology at the NICC
This book marks the 20th anniversary of the Department of Criminology of the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC). On the occasion of this anniversary, a series of research seminars were organised, during which NICC researchers, practitioners and international experts engaged in a dialogue on several key research themes. They discussed the future of the Department of Criminology and put the work of the NICC into perspective, both nationally and internationally. The results of these exchanges are bundled in this book.

En Belgique, le calcul, l’exécution et le cumul des peines soulèvent de nombreuses questions. Les personnes concernées et leur entourage sont souvent démunis face à la complexité des situations et leur caractère inextricable. Même de nombreux initiés du monde de la justice peinent à pouvoir leur répondre. Quand la peine (privative de liberté) prononcée par le juge commence-t-elle à être exécutée ? Quand une peine est-elle considérée comme ayant été entièrement exécutée ? Toutes les peines prononcées sont-elles exécutées ? Et si plusieurs peines ont été prononcées et doivent être exécutées : peut-on exécuter ces différentes peines en même temps ? Le sujet étant à certains égards très technique, cet ouvrage vise à guider le lecteur de manière accessible dans l’enchevêtrement de l’exécution des peines tel que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui en Belgique. Des perspectives critiques et/ou propositions d’amélioration sont également fréquemment mentionnées.

De berekening, uitvoering en cumul van straffen roept in België tal van vragen op. Voor betrokkenen en hun omgeving is het een vaak erg ingrijpend maar onontwarbaar kluwen. Ook heel wat insiders binnen de wereld van justitie moeten vaak het antwoord schuldig blijven. Wanneer neemt de door de rechter uitgesproken (vrijheidsberovende) straf begin van uitvoering? Wanneer beschouwt men een straf als volledig uitgevoerd? Worden alle uitgesproken straffen uitgevoerd? Wat indien er meerdere straffen werden uitgesproken en uitgevoerd moeten worden: kunnen verschillende straffen dan tezelfdertijd worden uitgevoerd? Juist omdat het thema in bepaalde opzichten zeer technisch van aard is, wil dit boek de lezer op een toegankelijke manier de weg wijzen in het kluwen van de strafuitvoering zoals we die vandaag in België kennen. Kritische bedenkingen of voorstellen tot verbetering komen daarbij veelvuldig aan bod.
The Fabrication of Virtue
First published in 1982, this book describes a new kind of prison architecture that developed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The book concentrates on architecture, but places it in the context of contemporary penal practice and contemporary thought. Beginning with an exploration on the eighteenth-century prisons before reform, the book goes on to consider two earlier kinds of imprisonment that were modified by eighteenth-century reformers. The theory and practice of prison design is covered in detail. The later parts of the book deals with alliance between architecture and reform, and with the connection between the utilitarian architecture of the reformed prisons and academic neo-classicism. The overall aim of the book is to show the profound change that was being wrought in the nature of architecture, which was exemplified in the reformed prisons. Architecture, one emblem of the social order, was now one of its fundamental instruments.
Responsible Design in Applied Linguistics: Theory and Practice
No mere history of applied linguistics, this volume presents a framework for interpreting the development of applied linguistics as a discipline. It offers a systematic account of how applied linguistics has developed, articulating the philosophical premises that have informed both its emergence and its subsequent growth. It asks questions that are seldom asked: Where does the discipline derive from? Where is it heading? What directions has it already taken? Which direction should it embrace in future? What is the relative worth of all of the variation in design and methods that have been developed by applied linguists? In defining applied linguistics as a discipline of design, it takes us beyond the diffuse and sometimes contradictory conventional definitions of the field. The framework of design principles it proposes not only helps to explain the historical development of applied linguistics, but also provides a potential justification for solutions to language problems. It presents us with nothing less than an emerging theory of applied linguistics.
