Forgiving Philosophy

Forgiving Philosophy

This book explores forgiveness as a philosophical matter. Responding to the curious omission of forgiveness in much of Western philosophy, it examines common themes and divergences on forgiveness in the works of Augustine, Kierkegaard, and Arendt. These writers understood forgiveness as a paradox—it must be contained to be given (Augustine), granted-yet-not-granted (Kierkegaard), and forgotten the moment it is given, as if never given at all (Arendt). Drawing on these insights, can forgiveness be then thought of as a hidden existential capacity and not as a magnanimous display of mercy? Can we imagine forgiveness as undoing the transgression we see, and secretly engaging with the imperceptible impossibility of undoing what has indeed been done?

Why Religion? Towards a Critical Philosophy of Law, Peace and God

  • Categories: Law

This book examines the relation between religion and jurisprudence, God, and peace respectively. It argues that in order to elucidate the possible role religion can play in the contemporary world, it is useful to analyse religion by associating it with other concepts. Why peace? Because peace is probably the greatest promise made by religions and the greatest concern in the contemporary world. Why jurisprudence? Because, quoting Kelsen’s famous book "Peace through Law", peace is usually understood as something achievable by international legal instruments. But what if we replace "Peace through Law" with "Peace through Religion"? Does law, as an instrument for achieving peace, incorporate a...

This edited volume explores political violence and genocide in Latin America during the Cold War, examining this in light of the United States’ hegemonic position on the continent. Using case studies based on the regimes of Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay, this book shows how U.S foreign policy – far from promoting long term political stability and democratic institutions – has actually undermined them. The first part of the book is an inquiry into the larger historical context in which the development of an unequal power relationship between the United States and Latin American and Caribbean nations evolved after the proliferation of the Monroe Doctrine. The region came ...

Arte e spiritualità. Omaggio a Antoni Tàpies

  • Categories: Art

To mark the centenary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona 1923-2012), the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Fundació Tàpies in Barcelona organised a conference entitled ‘Art and Spirituality’. This is the same title as the lecture that Tàpies gave at the UPF when he was awarded an honorary degree in 1988. It is with that lecture that we open the issue of Engramma that we present here, which bears the same title as this monograph dedicated to the Catalan artist. The issue contains contributions by Juan Eduardo Cirlot, Giulio Carlo Argan, Salvador Dalí - published in the years between 1955 and 1962 when Tàpies introduced Informal Art in Barcelona. We also publish some of the pape...
