Dr. Antoinette Day—a young, successful pathologist known to her friends and colleagues as Toni—has no idea what awaits her when Dr. Sally Shore arrives at Perrine Memorial Hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho, to fill in for a colleague recovering from a heart attack. Toni’s life is about to become a living hell. Dr. Shore is supposed to see patients, perform surgeries, and take turns covering the emergency room until the regular surgeon recovers from his quadruple bypass. But unfortunately, she uses her temporary opportunity to discredit Toni and tarnish her reputation with her medical colleagues. When the visiting surgeon is conveniently murdered—her lifeless body found in Toni’s office—Toni is the obvious suspect. But Toni is not going down without a fight. Forced to solve the murder in order to save her future, Toni’s life becomes even more complicated when her ex-boyfriend starts stalking her and threatening her husband. In this riveting murder mystery, a stubborn pathologist must rely on more than just her microscope as she delves into a complicated web of deception, soon discovering that it is not just her freedom at stake—but her life.

Microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip have, in recent years, come to the forefront in diagnostics and detection. At point-of-care, in the emergency room, and at the hospital bed or GP clinic, lab-on-a-chip offers the potential to rapidly detect time-critical and life-threatening diseases such as sepsis and bacterial meningitis. Furthermore, portable and user-friendly diagnostic platforms can enable disease diagnostics and detection in resource-poor settings where centralised laboratory facilities may not be available. At point-of-use, microfluidics and lab-on-chip can be applied in the field to rapidly identify plant pathogens, thus reducing the need for damaging broad spectrum pesticides while al...

Cyanobacteria: The Green E. coli

As the world struggles to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and curb greenhouse gas emissions, industrial biotechnology is also ‘going green.’ Escherichia coli has long been used as a model Gram-negative bacterium, not only for fundamental research, but also for industrial applications. Recently, however, cyanobacteria have emerged as candidate chassis for the production of commodity fuels and chemicals, utilizing CO2 and sunlight as the main nutrient requirements. In addition to their potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lowering production costs, cyanobacteria have naturally efficient pathways for the production metabolites such as carotenoids, which are of importanc...

Abstract: Oral health is important not only due to the diseases emerging in the oral cavity but also due to the direct relation to systemic health. Thus, early and accurate characterization of the oral health status is of utmost importance. There are several salivary biomarkers as candidates for gingivitis and periodontitis, which are major oral health threats, affecting the gums. These need to be verified and validated for their potential use as differentiators of health, gingivitis and periodontitis status, before they are translated to chair-side for diagnostics and personalized monitoring. We aimed to measure 10 candidates using high sensitivity ELISAs in a well-controlled cohort of 127 ...

Abstract: In the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, hundreds of transcripts were found that originate from genomic regions without annotation, suggesting their association with novel and unexplored functions. Some of these transcripts are non-coding RNAs with regulatory functions, while others are short mRNAs, encoding μ-proteins (proteins ≤80 amino acids). Six examples, called norf1, nsiR6, hliR1, norf4, ssr1169 and ssl2823, which were supposed to belong to the latter category, exhibited intriguing modi of expression and appeared as promising candidates for further investigation. First the expression patterns of norf1, nsiR6 and hliR1, which were expected to be specifically...

Automated Pre-analytic Processing of Whole Saliva Using Magnet-beating for Point-of-care Protein Biomarker Analysis

Abstract: Saliva offers many advantages for point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic applications due to non-invasive, easy, and cost-effective methods of collection. However, the complex matrix with its non-Newtonian behavior and high viscosity poses handling challenges. Several tedious and long pre-analytic steps, incompatible with PoC use, are required to liquefy and homogenize saliva samples before protein analysis can be performed. We apply magnet-beating to reduce hands-on time and to simplify sample preparation. A magnet in a chamber containing the whole saliva is actuated inside a centrifugal microfluidic cartridge by the interplay of centrifugal and magnetic forces. Rigorous mixing, which hom...
