A Museum of Dreams

Long before museum architecture became a popular tourist attraction, architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage and museum director Hendrik Enno van Gelder dreamed of an iconic museum building, a building in which visitors would feel at home and art would flourish in an ultimate setting. In 1935, their dream came true with the opening of a new museum for modern and applied art in The Hague. Although Berlage died in 1934 and thus did not live to see the museum completed, he and Van Gelder set an example for many later creations.00This richly illustrated book takes the original ideas of both the architect and the director as its starting point and shows how their ideas continue to contribute to the experience of Kunstmuseum Den Haag to this day. More than 150 photographs and a wealth of historical material provide a comprehensive picture of the building, including spaces that normally remain closed to visitors. This book paints a unique picture of a museum that has been loved by visitors, artists and architects from all over the world since the day it opened its doors.

Summary: Since a few years the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag organizes a series of small presentations in its new Triton Room. The focus is on the collection of the Triton Foundation, a unique private collection built up with great care over the past 15 years. The collection of the Triton Foundation focuses on masterpieces that represent the true artistic innovators in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. This ties in perfectly with the focus of the Gemeentemuseum's collection. The idea is to put together a number of carefully selected presentations with works from the Triton Collection and the Gemeentemuseum's collection. Following the presentations on the art of the Russian revolution, 19th-century French landscape painting, developments 1950-65, various faces of Cubism, 19th- and 20th-century portraits and the Nabis, this 7th presentation focuses on colour. Work by Matisse, Derain, De Vlaminck, Van Dongen, Klee, Kandinsky, Nolde and Beckmann. The exhibition shows us the development of colour as an independent expressive purpose. 11 April - 6 September 2009.

Self-portraits tend to be associated with self-satisfaction or narcissism. But in Meese's case this couldn't be further from the truth. Everything points to his extreme modesty. He is just as happy to completely obliterate his ego. Featuring many unpublished works, this catalogue shows the development and significance of selfportrait in the œuvre of the artist.

100 Years On: Revisiting the First Russian Art Exhibition of 1922

  • Categories: Art

The First Russian Art Exhibition (Erste Russische Kunstausstellung), which opened at the Galerie van Diemen in Berlin on October 15, 1922, and later travelled to Amsterdam, introduced a broad Western audience to the most recent artistic developments in Russia. The extensive show – more than a thousand works, including paintings, graphic works, sculptures, stage designs, architectural models, and works of porcelain – was remarkably inclusive in its scope, which ranged from traditional figurative painting to the latest constructions of the Russian avant-garde. Coming on the heels of the Treaty of Rapallo, the exhibition was a first cultural step towards bilateral relations between two youn...

THIS BABY DOLL WILL BE A JUNKIE

As the portrait of a fringe group, this book invites the reader to engage with the phenomenon of outcasts; it orders the rich material – which has grown out of numerous projects of artistic research with female drug users in European prisons and therapy institutions – and sets it into context. In this way, the conditions which have become structurally embedded in social processes are laid open and made perceptible as a matter of public concern. The biographical and artistic work with the inmates, the correspondence, the interventions in the isolated, public, and cultural sphere, the minutes, reflections, and results of the interdisciplinary exchange with scientists are comprehensively documented and illustrated.

Mondrian Evolution

  • Categories: Art

  • Categories: Art

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) immortalized the cypress tree in signature images that have become synonymous with his fiercely original power of expression. This richly illustrated publication illuminates the backstory of his invention for the first time, from his initial investigations of the motif in benchmark drawings from Arles to his realization of their full evocative potential in such iconic canvases as The Starry Night and Wheat Field with Cypresses, painted at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Susan Alyson Stein retraces the Dutch artist’s inspired response to the flamelike evergreens as they gained ground in his works and artistic thinking over the course of his sojourn in the South of France. The volume provides further insight into Van Gogh’s creative process through a technical study focused on two celebrated works from the artist’s epic painting campaign of June 1889. The visual and literary heritage of the cypresses is featured in a compilation of images and excerpts from nineteenth-century poetry, novels, and travel writing — many translated into English for the first time.
