Today, it is more vital than ever to build, or restore, a sustainable quality in our environment, from small scale interventions to landscape design. Such result can only be achieved by addressing specific theoretical and practical issues, namely how complexity should be conceived in architecture, how nature and architecture should interrelate, how the various disciplinary processes and the subjects who contribute to construction should be managed and mutually integrated.
This guidebook is a device and also an invitation to navigate through the educational landscape of three swiss schools of architecture, presented in the exhibition "Inventioneering Architecture". Reflecting and commenting on the academic student work put on display, it suggests future challenges and shows a broad spectrum of strategies of the profession, developed by numerous design and research studios.
Life Forms in the Thinking of the Long Eighteenth Century is a unique reappraisal of Enlightenment thought on nature, biology, and the organic world.
Cet ouvrage collectif met l'accent sur la dimension spatiale de l'hospitalité en acte ainsi que sur certaines situations spatiales, liées au soin d’autrui, comme enjeux contemporains de société permettant de les traiter de manière transversale.

Everyone knows Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the chateaux of the Loire Valley, but French architects have also produced some of the most iconic buildings of the twentieth century, playing a central role in the emergence and development of modernism. In France, Jean-Louis Cohen presents a complete narrative of the unfolding architectural modernity in the country, grappling not only with the buildings but also with the political and critical context surrounding them. Cohen examines the developments in urban design and architecture within France, depicting the continuities and breaks in French architecture since 1900 against a broader international background. Describing the systems of arch...
Aluminium is an extremely versatile material. Light-weight and resistant to corrosion, it is a particularly suitable material for certain building requirements. Aluminium already played an innovative role in the post-WWII years, as can be seen in the work of the French engineer, Jean Prouvé. And because of its aesthetical qualities and great strength, aluminium is a highly rated material in today s sophisticated architecture. This book provides a systematic overview of the applications of aluminium as a building material, giving information on the properties of the metal and highlighting the latest technical advances. A selection of 25 international projects document the application of aluminium in load-bearing structures, facades, roofs and windows. Amongst the projects included are Toyo Ito s Aluminium House in Tokyo, Renzo Piano s Mercedes Benz Design Centre in Stuttgart, SOM s Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, and Norman Foster s Greenwich Transport Interchange.
Skira's Library of Architecture Series now includes an entry for one of the standard bearers for modern Italian architecture and design, Gregotti Associati. Founded by Vittorio Gregotti, Gregotti Associati has worked on everything from broad urban renewal plans to corporate offices, to art exhibitions, even yacht design. The Gregotti sites in this "field guide" include public housing projects, university buildings, stadiums, and cultural centers across the Europe. The elegantly designed sketchbook of 30-plus projects clearly demonstrates why Gregotti Associati is included among the firms leading the construction of the new Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice, and why Europeans look to Gregotti as the exemplar of modernism.
