Este é um romance sobre um autista, filho de uma camponesa, que nasce na propriedade de uma aristocrata, no século XIX e na França. A aristocrata, Marguerite, o recolhe em sua casa e começa então seu esforço de fazê-lo desenvolver-se. Esse esforço é registrado em um diário, escrito entre 1891 e 1916. Nele, Marguerite reflete sobre a luta em que ela se engaja para fazê-lo sair de seu mutismo e entrar no mundo. O livro busca transmitir, de forma romanceada, uma visão psicanalítica sobre o autismo. A distância no tempo e no espaço é uma tentativa de oferecer certo recuo ao leitor, o que poderá permitir que ele veja o autista de uma perspectiva diferente daquela, organicista e reducionista, que é dominante nos dias atuais. O trabalho de Marguerite é uma maneira de apresentar o tratamento psicanalítico, avant la lettre, de um autista. A autora reúne, aqui, o que ela atravessou em seus anos de experiência com o autismo.
