Origins and Evolution of Life
Devoted to exploring questions about the origin and evolution of life in our Universe, this highly interdisciplinary book brings together a broad array of scientists. Thirty chapters assembled in eight major sections convey the knowledge accumulated and the richness of the debates generated by this challenging theme. The text explores the latest research on the conditions and processes that led to the emergence of life on Earth and, by extension, perhaps on other planetary bodies. Cosmopolitan Italy in the Age of Nations
Modern Italian historiography has undergone a substantial revision in the last quarter of a century. From an almost exclusive focus on the process of nation-building, the attention of historians has shifted. The most innovative research is now devoted to assessing to what extent the cosmopolitan attitude that was evident in the late eighteenth century morphed, but did not disappear, in the ensuing two centuries. The essays in this volume make the case that the age of nations had a profound impact on Italian history and contributed to the creation of an Italian identity within the framework of well-functioning imperial and global networks. They also acknowledge that the process of national individualization carried with it a variety of aspects that reconnected Italian history to the foreign cultures that were undergoing constant self-fashioning. Il libro traccia la storia della massoneria in Turchia, ripercorrendo cronologicamente gli avvenimenti che hanno visto l’introduzione dell’Istituzione massonica a opera degli europei e il successivo sviluppo in seno alla società turca. Di particolare rilevanza in questo contesto il periodo conosciuto come “governo massone”. L’autrice si è poi inoltrata nella descrizione delle vicende legate alla chiusura delle attività del 1935, e alla successiva ripresa del 1948, arrivando fino ai giorni nostri, analizzando la storia delle quattro Obbedienze che animano il sistema massonico turco: la Grande Loggia di Turchia, la Grande Loggia Liberale di Turchia, la Grande Loggia Massonica Femminile di Turchia e la Grande Loggia Mista di Turchia, passando per la costituzione dei Supremi Consigli. A chiudere il testo alcune biografie di importanti Grandi Maestri della Grande Loggia di Turchia, che con la propria azione hanno contribuito allo sviluppo dell’Istituzione in seno a una società civile intrisa di laicismo, ma ancora fortemente legata alla propria matrice religiosa musulmana.
Imagined, Embodied and Actual Turks in Early Modern Europe
The confrontation between European countries and the expanding Ottoman Empire in the early modern era has played a major role in numerous fields of history. The aim of this book is to investigate the European-Ottoman interrelations from three angles. One deals with the circumstances: How did the Europeans meet the Turks in pragmatic and diplomatic connections? Another concerns imagery: how were the Turks depicted in literature and art? The third examines performativity: how were the Turks inserted into plays, operas and ceremonies? This book confronts mental, visual and embodied images with historical positions and conditions. The focus, therefore, is on the dynamic interactive processes of experience, embodiment and imagination in context. Secondo i guru del self-help sì e il segreto risiede proprio nella costanza e nella cieca fiducia nel rituale… Attraverso la presentazione del microcosmo del self-help, Mattia Tasso introduce un variegato universo formativo che comprende saperi, discipline e tecniche volte al miglioramento personale auto-indotto o auto-generato riguardante la sfera economica, professionale, amorosa o emotiva. Le imperative esigenze del bilancio morale
All’indomani della proclamazione del Regno d’Italia, la nuova classe dirigente si trovò a dover affrontare una questione di immensa portata: quella della Pubblica Istruzione. Si trattava, per dirla con D’Azeglio, di fare gli italiani, ora che l’Italia era stata fatta.
