Obwohl noch ganz im Zeichen der Romantik stehend, weist Lermontows Lyrik bereits deutlich auf den französischen Symbolismus eines Baudelaire oder Verlaine voraus. Eric Boerners »Vorläufige Abschiede« gehört in seinem Aufbau zu den komplexesten Gedichtbänden der modernen Lyrik. Jeweils fünfzehn, in fünf Gruppen gegliederte thematisch zusammenhängende Gedichte werden von einer Einleitung und einem Epilog umrahmt. Diese 77 Gedichte werden wiederum von fünf strahlenförmigen Zeitachsen (Ägypten, griechisch-römische Antike, Judentum, Christentum und renaissancistische Moderne) duchlaufen, die sich innerhalb dieser Gruppen weiterentwickeln und miteinander interferieren. Dieser äußerlichen Komplexität entspricht die lyrische Bandbreite der einzelnen Gedichte, die vom einfachen Gelegenheitsvers bis zur ausgreifenden Litanei reicht. Therefore, the study of the cultural history of barbarism is a simultaneous exploration of the shifting contours of European identity. This two-volume co-authored study explores the history of the concept ‘barbarism’ from the 18th century to the present and illuminates its foundational role in modern European and Western identity.
