The Simons of Manchester
The Simons of Manchester revives the history of one of Manchester’s most influential families, the Simons. The book investigates the lives and public work of Henry and Emily Simon, and Ernest and Shena Simon. Through philanthropy and work in social reform, the two generations of the Simons greatly enriched Manchester’s cultural and civic institutions, worked to improve the lives of its citizens, and helped to spearhead profound national reforms in health, housing, planning and education. While many people in Manchester are familiar with the Simon name through Shena Simon College, Simonsway, and the Simon Building at the University of Manchester, there is scant public knowledge of who the Simons were and their legacy. Singing the News
Singing the News is the first study to concentrate on sixteenth-century ballads, when there was no regular and reliable alternative means of finding out news and information. It is a highly readable and accessible account of the important role played by ballads in spreading news during a period when discussing politics was treason. The study provides a new analytical framework for understanding the ways in which balladeers spread their messages to the masses. Jenni Hyde focusses on the melody as much as the words, showing how music helped to shape the understanding of texts. Music provided an emotive soundtrack to words which helped to shape sixteenth-century understandings of gendered monarchy, heresy and the social cohesion of the commonwealth. By combining the study of ballads in manuscript and print with sources such as letters and state records, the study shows that when their topics edged too close to sedition, balladeers were more than capable of using sophisticated methods to disguise their true meaning in order to safeguard themselves and their audience, and above all to ensure that their news hit home.

Metaphysischer Realismus

2010 - 2011
Aurora, das Jahrbuch der Eichendorff-Gesellschaft erschien als Fortsetzung des Almanachs Aurora (1929–1943) nach dem Kriege erstmals wieder 1953. Seitdem ist das Jahrbuch durch eine zunehmende Öffnung gegenüber dem kulturgeschichtlichen Umfeld von Eichendorffs Leben und Werk und seinen umfangreichen Rezensionsteil zu einem der führenden Publikationsorte und Referateorgane zur klassisch-romantischen Zeit geworden. In jedem Jahrgang findet sich zudem eine Jahresbibliographie zu Eichendorff. Publikationssprache ist Deutsch.
Kleist-Jahrbuch 2014
Dokumentation der Verleihung des Kleist-Preises 2013, unter anderem mit der Rede der Preisträgerin Katja Lange-Müller. Die Donau und ihre Grenzen
Die Donau durchquert eine komplexe, durch stetige Umformungen sich kennzeichnende Großregion. Kaum ein Fluss ist so grenzenreich und brückenarm - und dennoch überwiegt im kulturellen Wissen die Vorstellung der Donau als Band oder Wasserstraße. Dabei ist der Blick auf die narrativen Funktionen der Grenzen als Räume dynamischer Sinnbildungen und Identitätsformungen besonders lehrreich. Die Beiträge des Bandes arbeiten die typologischen Achsen der Donau als Grenze anhand von literarischen und filmischen Repräsentationen aus den verschiedenen Regionen entlang des Stroms heraus und gewähren sowie bisher unbekannte Einblicke in einen fluiden Donauraum.
