Originally published in 1976, this book examines how a new system of factory management was implemented in China after the liberation of 1948-9. At that time, the Chinese Communist Party attempted to integrate a commitment to broad participation in management by industrial workers with a rigid system of control deriving from the Soviet Union. The integration was not accomplished successfully and the events of the period 1948-53 discussed by Dr Brugger set the stage for the rejection of the Soviet model in the mid-1950s. The focus of the book is broadly political and sociological rather than economic, and the author examines closely the political background against which economic change was introduced. This book formed part of a growing genre of writing which rejected earlier assumptions of an uncritical acceptance in China of models of industrialism imported from the Soviet Union.

Many essential nutrients and minerals play a vital role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. Phosphate, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, iron, and vitamins are required for controlling the homeostatic balance of cells and tissue functions. Earlier works by Hartman et al. have shown that salivary phosphate levels can predict the genesis of obesity in children. Despite progress in our understanding of pathomechanism of metabolic diseases, there are knowledge gaps of how dysregulations of various minerals and nutrients are triggering and propagating metabolic disorders.

The 2nd Annual 2016 International Workshop on Materials Science and Engineering (IWMSE 2016) was held in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China on August 12 - August 14, 2016. The main aim of IWMSE 2016 was to provide a platform for scientists and engineers, to get together to share their research findings, exchange ideas and identify the future directions of R&D in materials science.In this conference, we have received over 272 high-quality papers, however, only 160 articles are included in the proceedings, covering topics such as ceramics and glasses, amorphous materials, nanomaterials and thin layers, soft magnetic materials, biomaterials, polymers, photovoltaic materials, steels, tool materials, composites, as well as functional and smart materials.
