Madrid

In A Tale of Three Thirsty Cities: The Innovative Water Supply Systems of Toledo, London and Paris in the Second Half of the Sixteenth Century, Chaim Shulman presents an analysis of three projects of urban water supply systems carried out between 1560s–1610s. The technical and economic differences between these projects resulted from external conditions not directly related to the water supply problem. Although the same basic technology was apparently available at the time in all cases, the geographical, engineering, entrepreneurial and cultural nature of each region differed. The inhabitants’ wellbeing improvement achieved varied accordingly. Much broader insights are drawn on the policies of the three monarchies regarding the initiative of and support for grand scale public works in general.

The volume offers broad overviews of the Colombian author’s total body of work, along with closer looks at some of his acknowledged masterpieces. New readings of One Hundred Years of Solitude are further complemented by fresh, stimulating, highly detailed examinations of his later novels (Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The General in His Labyrinth, Of Love and Other Demons) and storie...

While Carmen de Burgos (Almería 1867-Madrid 1932) belonged to the Generation of '98 in terms of her age, she is really too modern and progressive a figure for this categorization. A journalist, author, translator and progressive feminist intellectual, de Burgos was one of the most widely-read writers of her time. When she died she left a body of work impressive both in its quantity and quality: 12 full length and approximately 57 short novels. "La rampa" (1917) is the second full-length novel by Carmen de Burgos, and is dedicated «to all of the throngs of wounded and lost women who have come to me asking which path they should take, and who have made me feel their tragedy.» The Spanish li...

The History of Water Management in the Iberian Peninsula

This volume approaches the history of water in the Iberian Peninsula in a novel way, by linking it to the ongoing international debate on water crisis and solutions to overcome the lack of water in the Mediterranean. What water devices were found? What were the models for these devices? How were they distributed in the villas and monastic enclosures? What impact did hydraulic theoretical knowledge have on these water systems, and how could these systems impact on hydraulic technology? Guided by these questions, this book covers the history of water in the most significant cities, the role of water in landscape transformation, the irrigation systems and water devices in gardens and villas, an...
