Los manuales escolares como fuente para la historia de la educación en América latina
Las investigaciones que integran este volumen fueron elaboradas para un Seminario que, bajo el título «Los manuales escolares como fuente para la Historia de la Educación en América Latina. Un análisis comparativo», se celebró en la UNED, en Madrid, en Octubre de 1996. Este Seminario fue convocado por el proyecto interuniversitario de investigación sobre los manuales escolares españoles, MANES, con sede en el Departamento de Historia de la Educación y Educación Comparada de la UNED. La finalidad del encuentro fue la de impulsar y ampliar los vínculos del proyecto MANES con Universidades latinoamericanas, para lo cual fueron convocados investigadores de seis países, con un tema muy amplio que permitiera hacer un sondeo sobre el interés por la temática de los manuales escolares en América Latina. Los trabajos incluidos en este volumen se refieren a Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, México y Uruguay, abordando una gran variedad de temas y períodos cronológicos.
Historia de la educación (edad contemporánea)
El conocimiento de la evolución que ha experimentado la educación a lo largo del tiempo constituye un elemento de indudable valor para la formación de los profesionales que han de desarrollar su tarea en los sistemas educativos actuales. Como se ha repetido muchas veces, el estudio de la historia de la educación cumple, al menos, una doble función en su proceso formativo. Por una parte, les ofrece los recursos intelectuales que necesitan para analizar e interpretar su ámbito de trabajo desde una perspectiva histórica, así como para lograr una comprensión inteligente del lugar que ellos mismos ocupan en dicho contexto. Por otra parte, les permite desarrollar una conciencia histórica, de carácter crítico, que debe precaverles frente a las abundantes concepciones deterministas y las explicaciones intemporales de los hechos educativos en que participan.

The visual turn recovers new pasts. With education as its theme, this book seeks to present a body of reflections that questions a certain historicism and renovates historiographical debate about how to conceptualize and use images and artifacts in educational history, in the process presenting new themes and methods for researchers. Images are interrogated as part of regimes of the visible, of a history of visual technologies and visual practices. Considering the socio-material quality of the image, the analysis moves away from the use of images as mere illustrations of written arguments, and takes seriously the question of the life and death of artifacts – that is, their particular historicity. Questioning the visual and material evidence in this way means considering how, when, and in which régime of the visible it has come to be considered as a source, and what this means for the questions contemporary researchers might ask.

Emergent Issues in Education
In Emergent Issues in Education, leading scholars in comparative education and in the politics, sociology, anthropology, and economics of education illuminate worldwide trends in critical issues that confront policymakers and practitioners in different national settings. Among the topics raised and analyzed are the organization, governance, and financing of education; the content of curriculum, texts, and tests; and the quality and nature of teacher training. Among the issues examined is the tension that has emerged between the imperative to achieve equality of educational opportunity and the concern of educational decision makers to maintain and upgrade the quality of academic offerings. Aspects of this tension are manifested in the reform movements of the 1980s, especially the "excellence movement" that has resurfaced in the United States.
