Churchill In "Punch"

Punch featured Winston Churchill in more than 600 cartoons between 1899 to 1988. Some were laudatory, some were critical, and others, like the man himself, usually humorous. For the first time this book catalogues all the cartoons and provides a context of the events and people being satirised and places them in historical perspective. Early on Punch often made Churchill into a caricature of himself, promoting exaggerated images of his physical characteristics such as his forward leaning gait, his prominent jutting jaw, his cigar, and his hands on hips when speaking. His hobbies were frequently caricatured such as his love of polo, painting, writing skills and brick-laying. This book is not just for fans of Churchill, but for anyone interested in history, British life over the past 120 years, media and their response to government and politicians, cartoon aficionados and general society. It is an easy and fun read for the casual reader but also the academic who wants more depth through the appendices and an analysis of major world events through the eye of Punch.

Volume 39 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains eight reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the con nection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with polyamines as tumor markers; the histamine (H3)-receptor and its role as a general regulatory system; with cytokines as immunosti mulants and immunosuppressants as well as potential anticancer agents; with fibrinolysis and clinical use of thrombolytic agents; and with catechol O-methyltransferase and its inhibitors, which are of potential interest in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. An exten sive review on antihistamines (HI) provides an excellent survey of this area in drug research. In the 32 years that "Progress in Drug Research" has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the valuable help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews, and, last but not least, the review ers have all contributed greatly to the success of the series. Although the comments received so far have generally been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reassess the current position and the future direction of such a review series.

Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides: From Molecular Biology to Integrative Physiology

This book contains a selection of lectures given during the 5th International Symposium on Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides, recently held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides: From Molecular Biology to Integrative Physiology covers a wide range of subjects from molecular and cellular biology to clinical applications. A great emphasis has been placed on cutting edge information derived from studies using molecular and cellular biology techniques applied to the field of adenosine and adenine nucleotide research. The book also includes information on potentially promising developments in the therapeutic applications of adenosine related drugs and ATP. The tradition of past meetings is also maintained by including in the program presentations of new research in the areas of purine metabolism and physiology, and pharmacology of adenosine and adenine nucleotides. Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides: From Molecular Biology to Integrative Physiology is an excellent, up-to-date reference book for basic and clinical scientists in the field of adenosine and adenine nucleotides.

In the first years of the existence of this series of monographs, during the so-called "Golden Age" of drug research, the majority of the pa pers published were mainly concerned with the traditional domains of drug research, namely chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and pre clinical investigations. The series' aim was to give coverage to impor tant areas of research, to introduce new active substances with thera peutic potential and to call attention to unsolved problems. This objective has not changed. The table of contents of the present volume makes evident, however, that the search for new medicines has become increasingly complex, and additional, new disciplines have entered the resear...
