Im Zentrum von Teil I steht der Status quo der Selbstorganisation zwischen Individuum, Organisation und Gesellschaft. Ist Arbeit tatsächlich komplexer und subjektiver geworden? Woran scheitern die sogenannten „menschlicheren“ Modelle? Die in diesem Band versammelten Texte behandeln aktuelle Probleme der Informationstechnik. Es geht um die beeindruckenden Leistungen ebenso wie um die Mängel und Gefahren der neuen elektronischen Medien. Dabei richten die hier vorgelegten Analysen ihr besonderes Augenmerk auf die gesellschaftlichen Folgen, die mit der zunehmenden "Computerisierung" von Arbeit und Freizeit sowie der Kommunikation generell verbunden sind. Es wird aber nicht allein eine Bestandsaufnahme der gegenwärtigen Lage versucht, sondern auch nach aussichtsreichen theoretischen und praktischen Mitteln gefragt, die angemessene Reaktionen auf die vielfältigen Probleme der IT begünstigen. So werden einerseits theoretische Beschreibungs- und Erklärungsmöglichkeiten vorgestellt und erprobt, die ungewöhnliche Perspektiven eröffnen und zugleich der Komplexibilität des Gegenstands gerecht werden wollen.
