Anish Kapoor. Painting

Anish Kapoor. Painting

  • Categories: Art

A massive appraisal of a hitherto little-known aspect of Kapoor's prodigious output This 400-page volume is the first publication to explore in depth the painting of British artist Anish Kapoor (born 1934). It offers a unique insight into a language that has increasingly been a focus over the last 10 years, but which has also been an integral part of his studio practice since his career began in the late 1970s. In works that sit on the cusp between abstraction and figuration, Kapoor reveals a desire to go beyond the surface that has been so famously explored in his international beloved sculptural works. Image, surface, space and time appear in sometimes delicate but often violent symmetry. With essays from such as acclaimed thinkers as Julia Kristeva and Homi K. Bhabha, with whom the artist has collaborated in articulating his distinctive visual language, this extensive survey traces the trajectory that has led Kapoor to his boldest body of work to date.

Liu Xiaodong
  • Language: en

Liu Xiaodong

For his first exhibition in the UK, the Lisson Gallery invited Liu Xiaodong - one of China's foremost artists and a painter of international stature - to produce a new body of work in London. Over a period of six weeks, Liu Xiaodong documented his encounters with Londoners, much as he has done previously, while living and painting among residents of Tibet, Japan, Italy, Cuba and Israel. Focusing on three local businesses, two pubs and one Middle Eastern coffee shop, Liu produced one near-lifesize oil on canvas and eight acrylic photo-paintings (mixing photography and painting) at each location. Liu's London residency was documented by filmmaker Sophie Fiennes, whose complementary portrait of the artist at work is included with this catalogue as a DVD.

The Quick and the Dead

  • Categories: Art

To study anatomy, many artists dissected the dead to better depict the living. "The Quick and the Dead" focuses on a range of artists from Leonardo da Vinci to Cindy Sherman to show the great richness and complexity that can result when art and science intersect. The drawings, prints, photographs, and objects in this book span five centuries and mark numerous cultural shifts, yet their imagery is as powerful today as when they were created. 92 illustrations, 31 in color.
