It is AD121 and Legate Maxinius's Twentieth Legion is becoming demoralised by the covert tactics of the Picts, rebel warriors coming down from the north of Britannia to incite trouble between the invading army and the local Brigante people. Fearing an uprising and with growing frustration at Rome's lack of support, the legate ignores orders from Emperor Hadrian to consolidate his position without advancing and decides, at the peril of his career, that his legion must act by flushing out the rebels, shattering the peace of the area in the process. Wall of Stone follows the fate and fortune of two legionaries from the Twentieth Legion which intertwine with those of a local Brigante family. A fortuitous meeting with Emperor Hadrian who is secretly visiting Britannia, sends the legionaries on a mission south to save a specialist engineer, crucial to the diplomatic plans of Hadrian, from the threat of assassins. The success of the mission has huge ramifications for the stability of Britannia and the quest for peace has never been more critical.

Creole Composition

Creole Composition is a collection featuring essays by scholars and teachers-researchers working with students in/from the Anglophone Caribbean. To this end, it speaks to critical disciplinary conversations of rhetoric and composition and academic literacies while addressing specific issues with teaching academic writing to Anglophone Caribbean students. It features chapters addressing language, approaches to teaching, assessing writing, administration, and research ...

Exploring the roles of students’ pluralistic linguistic and transnational identities at the university level, this book offers a novel approach to translanguaging by highlighting students’ perspectives, voices, and agency as integral to the subject. Providing an original reconsideration of the impact of translanguaging, this book examines both transnationality and translinguality as ubiquitous phenomena that affect students’ lives. Demonstrating that students are the experts of their own language practices, experiences, and identities, the authors argue that a proactive translingual pedagogy is more than an openness to students’ spontaneous language variations. Rather, this proactive...

"Present unrest in the Middle East has many causes and takes on many forms. A collective sense of disenfranchisement, inadequate governance, geopolitical discord, and religious extremism all contribute to the conflicts in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, and Libya. Many Western observers and policymakers view unrest in the Middle East through the lens of binary religious sectarianism, focusing on the divisions between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims. This split is most clearly articulated in the geopolitical competition between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and it plays out through violence in Iraq and Syria. But the complexities of human identity and of regional culture and history do not lend themselves to this arguably too-simplistic interpretation of the situation. The authors analyze sectarianism in the region, evaluate other factors that fan the flames of violent conflict, and suggest a different interpretation of both identity and the nature of regional unrest"--Back cover.
