Die Stadt als künstlerischer Lebens- und Schaffensraum
Bildende Künstler als gesellschaftlich geformte und formende Akteure sind eng gebunden an ihr unmittelbares Lebensumfeld. Die Stadt Halle (Saale) als Lebensmittelpunkt und primärer Raum künstlerischen Wirkens bildet den Rahmen der Studie, die die Lebens- und Schaffensbedingungen bildender Künstler seit dem letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zum Beginn der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft untersucht. Im Zentrum der ideen- wie sozialgeschichtlichen Untersuchung stehen Veränderungen des Künstlerseins in Abhängigkeit von der dynamischen Entwicklung des halleschen Kunstsystems. Die Bürgerliche Gesellschaft als Wertekonzept bildet den Hintergrund für die Genese des Künstlerbildes und weist als Bezugsrahmen über den lokalen Zuschnitt der Studie hinaus. Die Bandbreite und der Wandel künstlerischer Existenz wird anhand ökonomischer Kriterien, zeitgenössischer Berufsbilder, künstlerischer Idealtypen und Vergemeinschaftungsprojekten vermessen.

Braunkohle war und ist ein problembehafteter Rohstoff. Dieser Befund gilt im Besonderen für die DDR, die von ihrer wichtigsten Energieressource in fataler Weise abhängig war. Viele der Umweltprobleme, die wir mit dem sozialistischen Staat verbinden, hatten ihren Ursprung in der Nutzung von Braunkohlen. Dabei versuchte die DDR lange Zeit, sich diesen Umweltproblemen zu stellen. Von einem determinierten „sozialistischen Ökozid" kann daher nicht die Rede sein. Der Autor zeichnet anhand der Rekultivierungsforschung und -praxis ausgekohlter Tagebaue nach, wie die DDR sich bereits ab den frühen 1950er-Jahren den Problemen stellte und Lösungen suchte. Die reich bebilderte Studie zeigt, wie bis in die 1970er-Jahre ein Wissenschaftsnetzwerk entstand, das seine Erkenntnisse auch systemübergreifend distribuierte. Dank dieser Forschungen war die DDR für einen historischen Moment eines der führenden Länder in der bergbaubedingten Umweltpolitik.
