Conflicts, Participation and Acceptability in Nuclear Waste Governance
This book is the last part of a trilogy and concludes a long-term project that focussed on nuclear waste governance in 24 countries. It deals with core themes of the disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW), e.g. the wicked problems of housing nuclear waste disposal facilities, public participation and public discourse, voluntarism and compensation in siting as well as the role of advisory bodies and commissions. The volume reflects on the diverse factors that shape the debate on what can be considered an ”acceptable solution” and on various strategies adopted in order to minimise conflicts and possibly increase acceptability. The various theoretical and empirical contributions shed light on several mechanisms and issues touched upon in these strategies, such as the role of trust, voluntarism, economic interests at stake, compensation, ethics, governance, and participation.

Darüber hinaus bietet das Buch eine Einführung in die Methode der Szenarioanalyse, die für den Aufbau von Aktivitäten der städtischen Vorausschau (Urban Foresight) auch in anderen Kommunen hochgradig relevant ist.
Doing Democracy Differently
Transnational civil society networks have become increasingly important democratizing actors in global politics. Still, the exploration of democracy in such networks remains conceptually and methodologically challenging. Practice theory provides a framework to study democracy as routinized performances even in contexts of fluid boundaries, temporal relations and a diffuse constituency. The author attempts to understand how new forms of democratic practice emerge in the interaction between political actors and their structural environments.

Among the universe of civil society organisations a special one gained significance in Germany in the last decades. It is an organisation of a higher order compared to ordinary civil society organisations in performing overall functions in the realm of civil society. These organisations among others stimulate civic engagement, gather and channel private and organisational engagement, support it and make it more visible to the public. Volunteering centres, community foundations and similar organisations can be seens as backbones and nodal points of a flourishing and independent civil society. This paper descibes the astonishing rise of civil society infrastucture (CSI) in Germany within the last decades. In doing so, the recent developments of the movement with regard to ownership, regional distribution, performed functions and financial ressources are described.Finally, the hypothesis will be posed that the emergence of CSI were accompanied and strongly influenced by a transition of the german state towards a more liberal state conception. ].
The Gamification of Citizens' Participation in Policymaking
This book examines the use of game elements to encourage citizens to participate in political decision-making and the planning of large-scale public sector projects. It argues that success is based on a personal concern with the project and a belief in the influence on political decision making, but also on fun. Without fun, only a very small group of the ‘usual suspects’ will participate, especially in classic policymaking approaches like citizens’ panels which require time and physical attendance. The book also examines the relationship between representative democracy and citizen participation from the perspective of direct democratic instruments in Germany. Readers from different countries with different political systems can decide for themselves, if and how the results from Germany are transferable to their respective conditions. Grounded in theoretical literature and statistical data, the book also makes use of narratives, applying a ‘storytelling’ approach to the case studies.
