A Critical Approach to International Water Management Trends
This edited volume provides a critical discussion of particular trends that are widely recognised to influence water management by comparing them with what is actually happening in the field. Among others, these trends include water security, adaptive or integrative management, and the water-energy-food nexus, which are often presented as essential means to reaching more sustainable and resilient water use. However, the extent to which these trends have managed to structure concrete practices in water management remains uncertain. Informed by empirically grounded research, each chapter of this work engages with a particular approach, concept or theory. Together, they provide a nuanced picture of trends in water management that require universal remedies and global norms.

Jean-Pierre Cuoni, a Banker with Heart
A man’s destiny is shaped by the work he does, but also by his attitude towards life, his values and his ethics. Jean-Pierre Cuoni, founder of the international bank EFG, together in collaboration with his old friend in the ranks Lonnie Howell, embraced the virtues of ethics and loyalty in the disillusioned, practical world of finance. He was the father of the name Private Banking, and revolutionised the traditional management model of the banking institution by promoting independence for his employees. Member of the Board of Directors of the Union des Bourses Suisses, of the Board of Directors of the Zurich Chamber of Commerce, Vice-President of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, Vice-President of the British Swiss Chamber of Commerce, Jean- Pierre Cuoni remained unknown to the general public. Sometimes criticised but often adored by those who knew him, Jean-Pierre Cuoni was a Swiss industry giant who knew how to build rather than destroy over decades wrought with major economic and political instability. Noëlle Demole, Cuoni’s first grand-daughter, decided to put in writing the fascinating biography of her grand-father, whom she deeply adored.
Performing Peace and Friendship
Performing Peace and Friendship tells the story of how the Soviet Union succeeded in utilizing the World Festival of Youth and Students in its cultural diplomacy from late Stalinism through the early Khrushchev period. Pia Koivunen discusses the evolution of the youth gathering into a Soviet cultural product starting from the first festival held in Prague in 1947 and ending with the Moscow 1957 gathering, the latter becoming one of the most frequently referred moments of Khrushchev’s Thaw. By combining both institutional and grass-roots’ perspectives, the book widens our understanding of what Soviet cultural diplomacy was in practice, re-evaluates the agency of young people and provides new insights into the Soviet role in the cultural Cold War. Koivunen argues that rather than simply being orchestrated rallies by the Kremlin bureaucrats, the World Youth Festivals also became significant spaces of transnational encounters for young people, who found ways to employ the event for overcoming the various restrictions and boundaries of the Cold War world.
