Los conocimientos acumulados sobre el acto de leer y del proceso para llegar a ser lectores competentes probablemente constituyen hoy en día uno de los dominios más conocidos de la psicología. Este libro trata de entender por qué la transferencia de estos conocimientos a la práctica profesional de los docentes ha venido siendo inesperadamente más exigua de lo que cabría esperar. Para ello ofrece evidencias de la magnitud de ese divorcio; avanza una posible explicación: sabemos más sobre lo que necesitan los alumnos para llegar a ser buenos lectores que sobre las necesidades de los profesores para aprender a darles respuesta y, en tercer lugar, propone introducir cambios progresivos y sostenibles en las prácticas de aula.
