A Regional Assessment of CO2 Storage Potential in the Browse Basin
"Geoscience Australia undertook a regional assessment of the geological CO2 storage potential of the Browse Basin, offshore northwest Australia, between 2013 and 2015 as part of the Australian Government's National CO2 Infrastructure Plan (NCIP). The NCIP program aimed to accelerate identification and development of suitable areas within Australia for long-term CO2 storage proximal to major emission sources. The Browse Basin was selected with two other offshore sedimentary basins and several onshore basins for pre-competitive data acquisition and geological studies under the NCIP funding."-- online abstract.

Geoscience Australia is leading the regional evaluation of potential subsurface mineral, energy and groundwater resources, through the Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program. Understanding the subsurface stratigraphy and depositional systems is fundamental for any exploration activities. The major challenge for exploration in northern and southern Australian onshore basins is the limited seismic data coverage; however, maximising the use of data in existing wells is a valuable source of information from which to gain insights into prospectivity. Geology at ANU (1959 - 2009)
This history was undertaken to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Geology Department at ANU, and to honour its founding professor David A. Brown. It includes contributions from some 100 former students outlining their career successes. This history was compiled by Dr Mike Rickard, a staff member of the Department of Geology from 1963 to 1997, who also served as Head of Department for seven years. He graduated BSc and PhD from Imperial College London in 1957 and has specialised in mapping the structure of mountain chains in Ireland, Canada, Norway, and southern South America. He also mapped volcanic rocks for the Geological Survey of Fiji. He taught Structural Geology and Tectonics and has supervised field work in south eastern and central Australia. After retirement he has taught U3A courses in Earth Science.
Exploring for the Future
"Exploring for the Future (EFTF) is a four year $100.5 million initiative by the Australian Government that aims to boost northern Australia's attractiveness as a destination for investment in resource exploration. As part of this program, Geoscience Australia has been tasked with gathering new pre-competitive data and information concerning potential mineral, energy and groundwater resources concealed beneath the surface, on an unprecedented scale. To ensure the program has the greatest impact Geoscience Australia will use innovative techniques in greenfield areas where the resource potential is completely unknown at a semi-continental scale. A major EFTF output is the acquisition of deep crustal seismic reflection data. The first tranche of this was completed in early August 2017 in the region between the southern McArthur Basin to the Mt Isa western succession, crossing the South Nicholson Basin and Murphy Province. "The South Nicholson Basin and immediate surrounding region are situated between the Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic Mount Isa Province and McArthur Basin. Both the Mount Isa Province and the McArthur Basin are well studied; both regions host major base metal mineral deposits, and contain units prospective for hydrocarbons. In contrast, the South Nicholson Basin contains rocks that are mostly undercover, for which the basin evolution and resource potential are not well understood. Tectonostratigraphic Evolution of the Centralian Superbasin (Australia) Revealed by Three-dimensional Well Correlations
"A key challenge in exploring Australian onshore sedimentary basins is limited seismic data coverage. Consequently, well logs are often the main datasets that can be used to understand the subsurface geology. The primary aim of this study was to develop a methodology for visualising the three-dimensional (3D) tectonostratigraphic architecture of sedimentary basins using well data, which can then be used to quickly screen areas warranting more detailed studies of resource potential. This project has developed a workflow that generates 3D well correlations using sequence stratigraphic well tops to visualise the regional structural and stratigraphic architecture of the Amadeus, Canning, Officer and Georgina basins in the Centralian Superbasin.
