A Paper Read at a Recent Meeting of the Kosmos Club of Columbia, S. C (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from A Paper Read at a Recent Meeting of the Kosmos Club of Columbia, S. C Every other week thirty-five members of the Kosmos Club, of Columbia, S. C. meet at the home of some member. In turn the members prepare and present a "paper" on some interesting topic. My choice of a topic was "Taxation in South Carolina." The reading of the paper is followed by a general discussion. This plan necessarily involves a time limit for the presentation of "the paper of the evening." This explanation is made to indicate that this does not pretend to be a full and complete presentation of the tax problem. At best it would only be an effort to point out the more important phases of the question. The ...

In this innovative book, Edmund L. Drago tells the first full story of white children and their families in the most militant Southern state, and the state where the Civil War erupted. Drawing on a rich array of sources, many of them formerly untapped, Drago shows how the War transformed the domestic world of the white South. Households were devastated by disease, death, and deprivation. Young people took up arms like adults, often with tragic results. Thousands of fathers and brothers died in battle; many returned home with grave physical and psychological wounds. Widows and orphans often had to fend for themselves. From the first volley at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor to the end of Rec...

A Question of Justice

Three trailblazers for education reform in the Sunbelt South. In southern politics, 1970 marked a watershed. A group of southern governors entered office that year and changed both the way the nation looked at the South and the way the constituents of those states viewed themselves. Reubin Askew in Florida, John West in South Carolina, Jimmy Carter in Georgia, and Albert Brewer in Alabama all represented a new breed of progressive moderate politician that helped demolish Jim Crow segregation and the dual economies, societies, and educational systems notorious to the Sunbelt South. Historian Gordon Harvey explores the political lives and legacies of three of these governors, examining the con...
