Ungarischer Episkopat und österreichische Monarchie
Die Bischofe in Ungarn, Kroatien und Siebenburgen hatten sich im ausgehenden konfessionellen Zeitalter in zweifacher Hinsicht der Integrationsforderungen einer expandierenden Staatsgewalt zu erwehren: als Vertreter autonomer kirchlicher Gewalt und als gesellschaftliche Herrschaftsgruppe. In welchen Phasen vollzog sich wahrend des spaten 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts der Ubergang vom traditionellen Bundnispartner der katholischen Habsburgermonarchie zum statusbewussten Gegner der Dynastie? Welche Gruppeninteressen wurden dabei im einzelnen beruhrt, welche Widerstandsformen entwickelt? Dies sind durchgangige Leitfragen der Untersuchung, die methodisch eine Kombination von Strukturgeschichte und Prosopographie, von Kirchen-, Sozial- und Ideengeschichte darstellt. Auf der Grundlage neu erschlossenen Archivmaterials wird mit dem romisch-katholischen Episkopat eine bisher kaum beachtete Gruppe vorgestellt, der fur die Freiheitskultur Ostmittel- und Sudosteuropas eine erhebliche Bedeutung zukommt.
