Instituciones electorales, opinión pública y poderes políticos locales en México
Esta investigación contribuye con originalidad al conocimiento del cómo las elecciones locales se desarrollan en el México actual. Para ello, se analizan los órganos de administración y justicia electorales locales bajo el supuesto de que su diseño institucional impacta en la calidad de las elecciones y en la confianza en sus resultados; se examinan los determinantes del juicio ciudadano sobre la legitimidad de los comicios, y se explora el efecto del poder de los gobernadores, la violencia homicida y la naturaleza del vínculo ciudadano sobre los procesos electorales.
Realidades divergentes en la democracia latinoamericana
Obra que reúne los trabajos presentados en el segundo Congreso Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Ciencias Sociales, celebrado en la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), con sede en la Ciudad de México, en el 2010. Entre los temas tratados destaca los procesos electorales y su financiamiento público en las elecciones presidenciales realizadas en América Latina durante el período comprendido entre 1996 y 2010. Public Policy and the Mass Media
The mass media are playing an increasingly central role in modern political life that expands beyond their traditional function as mediators between the world of politics and the citizens. This volume explores the extent and circumstances under which the media affects public policy; whether the political impact of the media is confined to the public representation of politics or whether their influence goes further to also affect the substance of political decisions. It provides an in-depth understanding of the conditions under which the media might, or might not, play a role in the policy process and what the nature of their influence is. Bringing together conceptual and methodological approaches from both political science and communications studies, this book presents an interdisciplinary perspective. It presents empirical evidence of the processes involved in the interaction between mass communication and policy and features case studies from Western Europe and the US and across different policy fields. The book will be of interest to students of public policy, political communication and comparative politics.
The Zapatista Movement and Mexico's Democratic Transition
Transitions from authoritarian to democratic governments can provide ripe scenarios for the emergence of new, insurgent political actors and causes. During peaceful transitions, such movements may become influential political players and gain representation for previously neglected interests and sectors of the population. But for this to happen, insurgent social movements need opportunities for mobilization, success, and survival. This book looks at Mexico'sZapatista movement, and why the movement was able to mobilize sympathy and support for the indigenous agenda inside and outside of the country, yet failed to achieve their goals vis-à-vis the Mexican state.
The Europeanization of National Foreign Policies Towards Latin America
Who shapes the European Union's policy towards Latin America? How has this EU policy modified individual member states' relations with the region? This book provides a comparative account of seven member states' bilateral links with Latin America since 1945, in the context of their EU membership and based on the concept of 'Europeanization'. It illustrates how and why the main architects of this EU policy have been Spain and Germany. In contrast, Poland, Sweden and Ireland, which had little previous interaction with Latin America, have developed their current relations with that region virtually as a result of their EU membership. The United Kingdom and France lie in the middle: they have been influential in certain policy-areas and key periods in history, while they have adapted to what is done at the EU level in others. Practitioners, established academic experts as well emerging scholars in the field bring to be bear a novel combination of pioneering research and cutting edge conceptual analysis on this important but neglected area of the EU's foreign relations.
