There is a cultural symbolism and an organised socio-emotional framework within which a person finds meaning in their existence. Third-order clinical work deliberately expands the conversation with clients about the impact of other systems of society on their discomfort, such as group membership, culture, economy, race, social class, work, etc. This is explored particularly the injustice and socio-cultural symbolism associated with the breakdown of solidarity dialogue, patterns of violence and therefore psychopathology. Third-order change occurs when there is a critical shift in the way individuals understand and relate to socio-cultural-emotional systems as part of the reality of which they are a part, rather than as something beyond their reach or power. This book explores concepts including indignant love, solidarity, self-critical honesty and the family of choice. The clinical aim is to enable individuals, families, and their community to return to dialogue in solidarity. This book is a valuable resource for students of psychology, clinical psychology, psychotherapists, counsellors and all professionals involved in community work and health.
In this controversial book, psychologists Barry Duncan and Scott Miller, cofounders of the Institute for the Study of Therapeutic Change, challenge the traditional focus on diagnosis, "silver bullet" techniques, and magic pills, exposing them as empirically bankrupt practices that only diminish the role of clients and hasten therapy's extinction. Instead, they advocate for the long-ignored but most crucial factor in therapeutic success-the innate resources of the client. Based on extensive clinical research and case studies, The Heroic Client not only shows how to harness the client's powers of regeneration to make therapy effective, but also how to enlist the client as a partner to make therapy accountable. The Heroic Client inspires therapists to boldly rewrite the drama of therapy, recast clients in their rightful role as heroes and heroines of the therapeutic stage, and legitimize their services to third-party payers without the compromises of the medical model.

The Psychology of Gender and Health: Conceptual and Applied Global Concerns examines the psychological aspects of the intersection between gender and health and the ways in which they relate to the health of individuals and populations. It demonstrates how gender should be strategically considered in the most routine research tasks—from establishing priorities, constructing theory, designing methodologies, in data interpretation, and how to practically apply this information in clinical contexts. The topics covered in its chapters answer the needs of professionals, students, and faculty, providing an up-to-date conceptual tool that covers the relationships that exist between gender and hea...
In Donald Trump’s America, protesting has roared back into fashion. The Women’s March, held the day after Trump’s inauguration, may have been the largest in American history, and resonated around the world. Between Trump’s tweets and the march’s popularity, it is clear that displays of anger dominate American politics once again. There is an extensive body of research on protest, but the focus has mostly been on the calculating brain—a byproduct of structuralism and cognitive studies—and less on the feeling brain. James M. Jasper’s work changes that, as he pushes the boundaries of our present understanding of the social world. In The Emotions of Protest, Jasper lays out his a...
