The urban fabric of contemporary cities like Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is changing at a rapid pace, with new development that rises to meet the population needs of modern society. This acceleration of development leaves behind a scattering of leftover void spaces. These voids present vital opportunities for social interaction as potential meeting points that allow people to be in direct contact with each other. Cites need to recognize such void spaces for their potential for social activation and memorable experiences for people in public. Two questions that drives void activation are; How can we unpack the potential of void spaces and weave social activities into our daily lives? Can one create socialization thru construct? The Master Thesis aims to create a VOID Toolkit that focuses on space as a magnet for social interaction bringing people together to make them aware of their city’s urban fabric and engage them culturally, physically, and environmentally.

The War in Darfur
No other crisis in Africa has received as much attention in the West during the past 10 years as the war in Darfur, yet the underlying complexities of the war and the background to the crisis remains poorly understood by scholars, activists and aid workers. This anthropological study of the war in Darfur explores the personal experience of war from the perspective of those refugees who have fled from it and puts forward potential solutions to the conflict. Drawing on ethnographic research carried out in the refugee camps of neighbouring eastern Chad,The War in Darfur: Reclaiming Sudanese History gives a voice to people who to date have had little opportunity to articulate their experiences. Through facilitating the telling of the refugees’ tale, examining what happened and how, this book will be an interesting contribution to the areas of refugee studies, anthropology and history.
Religion and State in Syria
While Syria has been dominated since the 1960s by a determinedly secular regime, the 2011 uprising has raised many questions about the role of Islam in the country's politics. This book demonstrates that with the eradication of the Muslim Brothers after the failed insurrection of 1982, Sunni men of religion became the only voice of the Islamic trend in the country. Through educational programs, charitable foundations and their deft handling of tribal and merchant networks, they took advantage of popular disaffection with secular ideologies to increase their influence over society. In recent years, with the Islamic resurgence, the Alawi-dominated Ba'thist regime was compelled to bring the clergy into the political fold. This relationship was exposed in 2011 by the division of the Sunni clergy between regime supporters, bystanders and opponents. This book affords a new perspective on Syrian society as it stands at the crossroads of political and social fragmentation.
