One of the most pressing questions facing society today is how to care for its burgeoning elderly population. By the year 2050, experts predict that one-third of the world’s population will be over 60 years old. Health promotion for the elderly is therefore becoming an increasingly important topic in public policy and planning. This book examines the challenges presented by an ageing global population, our varying expectations of healthy ageing, and the importance of exercise and physical activity for the elderly. Drawing on empirical research from around the world, it considers the factors that influence health and well-being in later life and compares practices and policies designed to promote healthy ageing. It presents case studies from 15 countries spanning Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia, and sheds light on how attitudes to physical activity differ across nations, regions and cultures. Ageing, Physical Activity and Health: International Perspectives is important reading for all students, researchers and practitioners with an interest in physical activity, public health, exercise science or gerontology.
This multidisciplinary book draws on sociology, cultural studies, anthropology and history, to explore the diversity, challenges and achievements of Latin American women in sport. It offers an in-depth analysis of women’s sport in ten countries across Latin America, insights into the sport activities of indigenous peoples, and the contributions of Latin American women to sport living outside of the region. The book also provides a comprehensive overview of international developments in gender and sport research, policy development and theory, and addresses sport participation at many levels including in school-based physical education, community and high performance contexts.

Biologically Active Natural Products: Pharmaceuticals demonstrates the connections between agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals and explores the use of plants and plant products in the formulation and development of pharmaceuticals. Experts from around the world examine a multitude of topics, including evaluation of extracts from tropical plants for p
This work is the result of an extensive research into the permanent establishment concept, a concept that plays a vital role within the international taxation system through the fair allocation of taxing rights over cross-border business profits in the context of the tenuous balance between the residence and source principles, as a threshold for source taxation. Our research sought to explore and explain the evolution of this concept in the context of recent changes resulting from the joint work of the G20 and the OECD, namely under the aegis of the BEPS Project (Action 7), and later with the enactment of the Multilateral Instrument and the update to the OECD Model Convention. We also address the Portuguese permanent establishment concept and, finally, the future of the permanent establishment concept within the international taxation system.
Age effects have played a particularly prominent role in some theoretical perspectives on second language acquisition. This book takes an entirely new perspective on this issue by re-examining these theories in light of the existence of apparently similar non-native outcomes in adult heritage speakers who, unlike adult second language learners, acquired two or more languages in childhood. Despite having been exposed to their family language early in life, many of these speakers never fully acquire, or later lose, aspects of their first language sometime in childhood. The book examines the structural characteristics of "incomplete" grammatical states and highlights how age of acquisition is r...
The Fourth Brazilian Congress of Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Pharmacy showcases Brazil's role within the vibrant and evolving community of pharmacotherapy and clinical pharmacy in Latin America. This volume offers a window into Brazil's ongoing contributions as part of a collective Latin American effort, presenting a comprehensive collection of scientific investigations and documented clinical experience reports that address important healthcare challenges. Containing hundreds of peer-reviewed works, evaluated through a double-blind review process, this publication documents ongoing progress in evidence-based, patient-centered pharmaceutical care. The compilation adheres to rigorous scientific standards, with submissions evaluated for methodological soundness, clinical relevance, and adherence to ethical guidelines. Systematically organized to facilitate knowledge transfer, this resource offers understandings into emerging therapeutic protocols, pharmacological interventions, and clinical decision-making frameworks. For researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, this publication provides an essential, data-driven foundation for advancing pharmaceutical practice in the region.
This book discusses basic and applied aspects of somatic embryogenesis, one of the most powerful tools in plant biotechnology. It is divided into three parts; Part I includes topics such as the history of this research field, how differentiated plant cells can (re)acquire totipotency, molecular features, as well as the epigenetics and proteomics of somatic embryogenesis. Part II covers the somatic embryogenesis of different crops, such as Agave spp. maize, Cocos nucifera, Bixa orellana, Capsicum spp., Coffea spp., Musa spp., Pinus spp., and Arabidopsis thaliana. Various applications, like scale-up propagation and genetic engineering are discussed in detail in Part III. The book will appeal to plant scientists, plant breeders and experts working in industry.
