Pick Interpolation and Hilbert Function Spaces

Pick Interpolation and Hilbert Function Spaces

The book first rigorously develops the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The authors then discuss the Pick problem of finding the function of smallest $H^infty$ norm that has specified values at a finite number of points in the disk. Their viewpoint is to consider $H^infty$ as the multiplier algebra of the Hardy space and to use Hilbert space techniques to solve the problem. This approach generalizes to a wide collection of spaces. The authors then consider the interpolation problem in the space of bounded analytic functions on the bidisk and give a complete description of the solution. They then consider very general interpolation problems. The book includes developments of all the theory that is needed, including operator model theory, the Arveson extension theorem, and the hereditary functional calculus.

Cysticercosis of the Human Nervous System

Neurocysticercosis (neural infection by larvae of Taenia solium) occurs when humans become intermediate hosts of the tapeworm Taenia solium after ingesting its eggs. The disease is now the most common helminthic infection of the nervous system in humans, and its prevalence has risen significantly even in countries where it was formerly considered exotic. The introduction of modern neuroimaging and serologic techniques has improved the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis; furthermore, the development of potent cysticidal drugs has changed the prognosis of most affected patients. Nevertheless, much remains to be learned about this parasitic disease. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the various aspects of cysticercosis of the nervous system that will be of interest to all who are involved in the care of patients with this disease. Epidemiology, neuropathology, immunopathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management are all thoroughly discussed based on current evidence and practice.

Geometric Analysis and Function Spaces

Geometric Analysis and Function Spaces

This book brings into focus the synergistic interaction between analysis and geometry by examining a variety of topics in function theory, real analysis, harmonic analysis, several complex variables, and group actions. Krantz's approach is motivated by examples, both classical and modern, which highlight the symbiotic relationship between analysis and geometry. Creating a synthesis among a host of different topics, this book is useful to researchers in geometry and analysis and may be of interest to physicists, astronomers, and engineers in certain areas. The book is based on lectures presented at an NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held in May 1992.

Introduction to the Theory of Random Processes

This book concentrates on some general facts and ideas of the theory of stochastic processes. The topics include the Wiener process, stationary processes, infinitely divisible processes, and Ito stochastic equations. Basics of discrete time martingales are also presented and then used in one way or another throughout the book. Another common feature of the main body of the book is using stochastic integration with respect to random orthogonal measures. In particular, it is used forspectral representation of trajectories of stationary processes and for proving that Gaussian stationary processes with rational spectral densities are components of solutions to stochastic equations. In the case o...

Yeasts in Natural Ecosystems: Diversity

This book focuses on the diversity of yeasts in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including the association of yeasts with insects, invertebrate and vertebrate animals. It offers an overview of the knowledge accumulated in the course of more than 60 years of research and is closely connected with the volume Yeasts in Natural Ecosystems: Ecology by the same editors. In view of the rapid decline of many natural habitats due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, the need to study biodiversity is pressing. Rising temperatures threaten species inhabiting cold and aquatic environments, and species in terrestrial ecosystems are endangered by habitat fragmentation or loss. Most of our knowledge of intrinsic properties (autoecology) of yeasts reported throughout this book is derived from laboratory experiments with pure cultures. Accordingly, the importance of culture collections for ecological studies is highlighted by presenting an overview of worldwide available yeast strains and their origins. All of the chapters were written by leading international yeast research experts, and will appeal to researchers and advanced students in the field of microbial diversity.
