Concerning religion, there are contributions on critical perspectives on reincarnate lamas, and on cases of revival and reinterpretation of popular rituals. Amdo Tibetan self-expression in art, literature, and performance are studied in articles on folk songs, painters and their works, and on the changing economics of cultural production. The final chapters deal with social and economic trends in two nomadic pastoral areas and with foreign aid for new Tibetan schools. Since the occupation of Tibet by the Peoples Republic of China in 1959, former border principalities and feudatories of the former realm of the Dalai Lama have broken away and have developed sociopolitical and economic bonds with other states. Sikkim, Bhutan, Ladakh, and the Tibeto-Burman speaking regions of Burma, Nepal, and others have all developed strong ethnic identities apart from Tibet. The Exotic Other and Negotiation of Tibetan Self
This study examines various representations of Tibet in Tibetan and Chinese fiction from the 1980s. With its analysis of some of the first Tibetan short stories published approximately a decade after the end of the Cultural Revolution it greatly contributes to the scholarly research of the rise of modern Tibetan literature. The image of Tibet that appears in the works of Tibetan authors is there compared with the Chinese representations of Tibet from the same period.
