This book introduces students on Multiple Criteria Decision Aiding and Making courses to practical, real-world cases. Each case study introduces a problem or situation together with a method, and a description and explanation of a computer application. In this sense each chapter is based on four pillars: the problem, the model building, the methods and their implementation. The book presents and elaborates a rich and comprehensive set of practical problems comprising multiple criteria, including numerous approaches for their solution, for decision support or decision aid. It complements traditional textbooks and lecture material by employing case studies to promote a deeper understanding of the investigated concepts and help students apply these methods to other areas.
Reviews key steps in improving data management, from improving data access and establishing standards for reliable data to effective tagging for discoverability as well as data security Covers a wide range of practical applications of decision support systems (DSS) in crop production, such as crop planting, nutrition and use of rotations Includes the use of DSS in key areas of livestock production such as feed optimization and pasture management
Sustainability is a fairly old concept, born in the 18th century in the field of forestry, within a mono-functionality perspective. The concept has considerably evolved in the last few years towards a multi-functionality context, with applications reported in practically all areas of economic interest. On the other hand, modern sustainability is a complex problem, for two reasons: a) The multiplicity of functions of a very different nature involved in the process and b) The manner in which different segments of the society or stakeholders perceive the relative importance of these functions. For the above reasons, a realistic approach for dealing with the sustainability issue requires taking ...
This is an open access book. As on date, huge volumes of data are being generated through sensors, satellites, and simulators. Modern research on data analytics and its applications reveal that several algorithms are being designed and developed to process these datasets, either through the use of sequential and parallel processes. In the current scenario of Industry 4.0, data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning are being used to support decisions in space and time. Further, the availability of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) have enabled to processing of these datasets. Some of the applications of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Lear...
Part 1 reviews general issues underpinning effective decision support systems (DSS) such as data access, standards, tagging and security. Part 2 contains case studies of the practical application of DSS in areas such as crop planting and nutrition, livestock feed and pasture management as well as supply chains.
Many people worldwide lack adequate access to clean water to meet basic needs, and many important economic activities, such as energy production and agriculture, also require water. Climate change is likely to aggravate water stress. As temperatures rise, ecosystems and the human, plant, and animal communities that depend on them will need more water to maintain their health and to thrive. Forests and trees are integral to the global water cycle and therefore vital for water security – they regulate water quantity, quality, and timing and provide protective functions against (for example) soil and coastal erosion, flooding, and avalanches. Forested watersheds provide 75 percent of our fres...
This book presents an introduction to MCDA followed by more detailed chapters about each of the leading methods used in this field. Comparison of methods and software is also featured to enable readers to choose the most appropriate method needed in their research. Worked examples as well as the software featured in the book are available on an accompanying website.
The queenship of the first European Renaissance queen regnant never ceases to fascinate. As fascists to feminists fight over Isabel’s legacy, we ask which recyclings of her image are legitimate or appropriate. Or has this figure taken on a life of her own?
