An intrepid investigation into the pro-democracy movements that have reshaped the Eastern bloc since 2000, reopening the Kremlin's wounds from the Cold War. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 and the Soviet Union collapsed two years later, liberal democracy was supposed to fill the void left by Soviet communism. Poland and Czechoslovakia made the best of reforms, but the citizens of the Evil Empire itself saw little of the promised freedom, and more of the same old despots and corruption. Recently, a second wave of reforms-Serbia in 2000, Georgia in 2003 and Ukraine in 2004, as well as Kyrgyzstan's regime change in 2005 - have proven almost as monumental as those in Berlin and Moscow. The peo...

Over the course of many years, from the time I began to read with intention, there have been luminous words, sentences and paragraphs I wished to bookmark so as not to forget them. Notes were written on legal pads or nearby napkins and more recently computers which allowed me to jot them down contemporaneously and save them from oblivion. The thought was to one day compile them into some sort of comprehensive anthology of written thoughts I believed were meaningful. It's not always entire books that change people's perspectives, often it is just paragraphs or sentences and this is what has been gathered and presented here. Being knowingly forgetful it seemed important to me to bookmark these human expressions, some of them two thousand years in the making for my own edification and hopefully to kindle an interest in others to more fully explore what sparks their curiosity.Mark lives in Carmel Valley, Californiawith his long time partner Laurie.

Electing the President, 2004

The 2004 presidential election was closely watched from all corners of the world and dominated the media for nearly a year. From the opening announcements of campaigns through the primaries and debates to the first Tuesday in November, the presidential election was ubiquitous, filling our email inboxes and directing our dinner conversation, turning us all into amateur political analysts. Electing the President, 2004 offers the views of the professional political operatives who ran the campaigns. In this volume, the consultants who brought the country the Bush-Cheney and Kerry-Edwards contest of 2004 explain the strategies behind the ads and debates, discuss what they did and failed to do to ...

Return to Uluru explores the cold case that strikes at the heart of Australia’s white supremacy—the death of an Aboriginal man in 1934; the iconic life of a white, "outback" police officer; and the continent's most sacred and mysterious landmark. Inside Cardboard Box 39 at the South Australian Museum’s storage facility lies the forgotten skull of an Aboriginal man who died eighty-five years before. His misspelled name is etched on the crown, but the many bones in boxes around him remain unidentified. Who was Yokununna, and how did he die? His story reveals the layered, exploitative white Australian mindset that has long rendered Aboriginal reality all but invisible. When policeman Bill...
