The Ottoman Mobilization of Manpower in the First World War offers a multi-faceted story of how the Ottoman Empire tried to cope with the challenges of permanent mobilization under total war conditions which reshaped state-society relations. By focusing mainly on Anatolia and the Muslim population, Mehmet Beşikçi argues that the conditions of mobilization pushed the Ottoman state to become more centralized, authoritarian and nationalist, but the increasing dependence on people paradoxically also enlarged their space of action vis-à-vis state authority. The book demonstrates that people’s responses to the state’s needs constituted a wide spectrum ranging from voluntary support to open resistance such as desertion. In turn, the state responded by revising its mobilization policies and reformulating new mechanisms of control at the local level.

Transformation of Muslim Mystical Thought in the Ottoman Empire
One of more poorly understood aspects of the history of the Ottoman Empire has been the flourishing of Sufi mysticism under its auspices. This study tracks the evolution of the Halveti order from its modest origins in medieval Azerbaijan to the emergence of its influential Sa'baniyye branch, whose range extended throughout the Empire at the height of its expansion. By carefully reconstructing the lives of formerly obscure figures in the history of the order, a complex picture emerges of the connections of Halveti groups with the Ottoman state and society. Even more importantly, since the Sa'baniyye branch of the order grew out of the towns and villages of the northern Anatolian mountains rather than the major urban centres, this work has the added benefit of bringing a unique perspective to how Ottoman subjects lived, worked, and worshiped outside the major urban centres of the Empire. Along the way, it sheds light on less-visible actors in society, such as women and artisans, and challenges widely-held generalizations about the activities and strategies of Ottoman mystics.

Das Duden-Aussprachewörterbuch ist das Standardwerk zu Fragen der Aussprache und Betonung des Deutschen. Die 8. Auflage wurde um über 4000 Stichwörter erweitert und enthält 144.000 Aussprachen zu Wörtern und Namen, inklusive im Deutschen gebräuchlicher Fremdwörter und fremdsprachlicher Namen. Alle Stichwörter wurden vertont und die Audios sind als Download verfügbar. Ein ausführliches Kapitel beschreibt die Regeln der Lautung und in zahlreichen Infokästen finden sich Informationen zu Aussprachephänomenen wie der Sprechpause beim Gendern. Entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim.
