En el concilio celebrado en Vienne (Francia) en 1311, el papa Clemente V decretó un Canon en el que se autorizaba y ordenaba a las universidades de Salamanca, Oxford, París y Bolonia la enseñanza de lenguas orientales, en concreto, de «árabe, hebreo y caldeo».
