I nomi propri sono considerati un mistero anche dai teologi (quelli delle divinità sono spesso indicibili), dai filosofi, dai cultori di pratiche esoteriche, dalla Giulietta di William Shakespeare. Ogni giorno però li usiamo senza imbarazzi: per chiamarci l’un l’altro, per ordinare un prodotto commerciale, per dare indicazioni stradali. Con facilità li scambiamo con i nomi comuni, chiamando Roma “l’Urbe” e “una babele” uno stato di disordine. A mezz’altezza fra le speculazioni più criptiche e gli usi spensierati Nunzio La Fauci affronta i nomi propri là dove si trovano: nella lingua in atto. A partire da osservazioni minuziose e sorprendenti (un tempo Antonio diventava “Tonio” mentre adesso diventa “Anto”: perché?) l’analisi schiude prospettive sulla lingua come sistema. Si scopre così che nessun nome è proprio per sempre, o giammai lo sarà. Quella dei nomi propri non è una condizione ontologica: è una funzione.

Ce volume est organise autour de trois themes principaux: les verbes de mouvement, les constructions doubles standard/croisees, et les verbes supports.
Europe and the Mediterranean as Linguistic Areas
This volume is a collection of 12 papers which originated from a research project on 'Europe and the Mediterranean from a linguistic point of view: history and prospects'. The papers deal with specific morphosyntactic aspects of language structure and evolution. The comparative perspective is adopted both from a synchronic (typological) and a diachronic (historical) angle, focusing in particular on possible contact phenomena. Therefore, methodological key words of this book are areal typology and linguistic area. The issues addressed cover such diverse aspects of language structure and change as verb morphology, relative clause formation, Noun Phrase determination, demonstrative systems, possessive markers in Noun Phrases, conjunctive, disjunctive and adversative constructions, non-canonical object marking, impersonal constructions, reduplication and early translations of the Gospels. Lexical-semantic Relations
This collection of articles sketches the complexity of the subject of lexical-semantic relations and addresses semantic, lexicographic and computational issues on an array of meaning relations in different languages. It brings together a variety of linguistic studies on the contextualised construction of synonymy and antonymy in discourse. It shows that research on language and cognition calls for empirical evidence from different sources. This volume demonstrates how the internet, corpus data, as well as psycholinguistic methods contribute profitably to gain insights into the nature of the paradigmatics in actual language use. Machine Translation
The use of the computer in translating natural languages ranges from that of a translator's aid for word processing and dictionary lookup to that of a full-fledged translator on its own. However the obstacles to translating by means of the computer are primarily linguistic. To overcome them it is necessary to resolve the ambiguities that pervade a natural language when words and sentences are viewed in isolation. The problem then is to formalize, in the computer, these aspects of natural language understanding. The authors show how, from a linguistic point of view, one may form some idea of what goes on inside a system's black box, given only the input (original text) and the raw output (translated text before post-editing). Many examples of English/French translation are used to illustrate the principles involved.
